Surfing with a gash?

Postby Beachbum » Thu Jun 04, 2009 10:04 am

I went out surfing today, and before I could even reach the line up, I stubbed my toe bad on a sharp rock. It sliced it down the middle of my second toe, and it still bleeds if I apply a lot of pressure on it. Will I be able to surf if I wrap it in duck tape or something? Or should I just give it a rest, and not become shark bait?

Well blood is not good in the water for the shark factor. I would worry more about how clean your water is if it is that deep of a cut. You don't want any nasty crud getting into the cut from pollution. If it bleeds so easy maybe a stitch or two is another option

That's how you get coral growing in your foot (obviously depends where you are in the world). Happened to a girlfriend of mine, when she got back to Scotland she became the hospital freak with all the doctors wanting a look and a poke at her toe.

I say go for it. If something happens it'll be a good conversation piece and you might also get a good picture which you can post here!
Lets face it, chicks dig gangrenous appendages!

Actually that's a really good way to close up cuts. I've done it before and saved myself a trip to the emergency room. Plus you get a cool scar to remember the incident by :D

Make all the weird faces you want, but when the time comes when you might happen to get a gash, you'll think about whether you're going to want to pay money out of your ass to go to the emergency room or if you're going to get a 2 dollar bottle of super glue and fix it yourself.

Ah, the glories of living somewhere with a national health system! You can spend all the 2 dollars you want on glue, over here we'll get a friendly nurse to put a couple of stitches in it for free!

I was relieved after reading through this thread, thought you were asking the difficulties of surfing with a girl.

At the local pharmacy, in the first aid section, they sell liquid skin, it's antibacterial crazy glue. I use that for any open wounds before surfing. Stings like a mother, but it puts a nice heavy layer of glue on the cut. Great for bottom of the foot gashes from reef cuts

I gotta look for that liquid skin stuff because super glue tends to tear easily.
