How to fix a delam?

Postby Beachbum » Fri May 29, 2009 2:52 am

It's my first time getting a delam and I tried to fix it on my own, and to my horrible idea, it didn't work out. I sanded around the soft section and sliced that area out, as I tried to use fiberglass to substitute glue.... That didn't work out at all, and I was wondering if I should just fiberglass these two massive white splotches of foam on my board?

You can sand the spots just enough to get the crap off and make clean surface. Then you need to mix some filler in with the resin and catalyst. The filler is white and will make the resin thick like a paste. Then tape around the area with masking tape on the remaining glass to make the fix look clean. It also creates a border so the resin won't spread out where you don't want it to causing a low spot where you will have to fill it again. You want it to fill a little higher than the glass. Then you can sand it back down flush with the original glass. Then sand the spot down just so the cloth ( TWO pieces of 4 oz) will be flush with the original glass. Set the cloth in the spot. use clear resin with catalyst to re glass the board. Sand til 220 grit or so.

Is this a fiberglass or newer epoxy board? Try to use the same resin if you can. If you buy a ding repair kit they usually come with instructions. Filler material and the resin is used if you have a deep ding or sanded too far. You might only need to lay the glass down, laminate it, and hot coat it. Find out the layers of cloth on your board. Are these delams on the top or the bottom? Some boards have less cloth on the bottom. The foam sands deep very quickly, so sand it very carefully if at all.
