Messed up board

Postby Oceanbreather » Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:16 pm

So I got this surfboard, i don't know how it got so fleshin' up but it is seriously fleshin' up. I just want to practice repair mostly. I looked up repair and their aren't many articles on how to repair delamination and missing glass. This board has a delamination a foot long and 4 inches across. All the guides i see recommend cutting off the glass and relaminating instead of just injecting resin. But I'm not really sure the point of that. Why can't I just inject resin and clamp the glass to the board while it hardens? There's a 4"x5" spot of missing glass, would a surf board repair kit have enough replacement glass? And where can i get filler for holes?

I ended up doing the repair by the bookish. Took off the delamed glass.
A note to anyone trying this in the future; Sand it down the the softer angle on the outside so when you pull the delamed glass off it has an edge, but the glass still on the board is almost flush with the foam and no edge. Also, when using a razor point the edge away from the laminated glass and toward the delamed glass.
Put down a new layer of glass and then put the old glass back on over the new layer. It's still delaminated on the edges and on the stringer.
Another note. If a delamination crosses over the stringer it's best to either cut the delamed glass so you have to sections or to sand down and build up glass on the edge of the stringer so it's a smooth surface.
I'm not worried about the delam, when it gets really bad i'll just have more practice.
There's a really bad looking discoloration where I replaced the glass. Should I paint it?

Paint it ? - mmmm - have a go. Try different paint to see which lasts the longest maybe.
Paint your logo over the discoloration ?
Sounds like you are having fun !

Oh Darn, I got a small ding in my board so i decided to leave it in a 'warm' car to dry it out, but i forgot the car was running and roasted my board for about 3 hours. Result is I now have an area of delamination near the tail either side of the stringer, about 8 x 4 inches BOTH sides of the stringer. Question is, how easy is it to repair this, or is the board dead?
(Board is an epoxy Strive Fish)
Any advice, step by step guide would be REALLY helpful to save my board :-)

(Can I just cut round 3 sides of the delam, peel it back, stuff loads of resin in there and press it back down? Will that do it, or do I need to get more serious?)
