G5 fins alternative to loosen up my board

Postby badger rider » Thu Mar 19, 2009 4:04 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know what fins would be the best to replace G5's to give a board a new lease of life?

Ive got a 6'2'' egg, with G5s. Its an amazing board, easy and forgiving. Although already pretty manoeverable i want to make the board a little looser and tighter to make the most of the wave. Is there a fin out there that can change the way an 'easy' board can become more performance??? Any advice would be great guys.
Ive been looking at the fg-5's or fg-3's, they seem pretty flexible. Anyone been in a similar situation???

yes. fins can change a board completely, i wouldn't really ask for advice on what fin to get as its more personal preference due to surfing styles. would use the fcs test drive option, try before you buy so you can see what fins suit you and the waves you surf. if you really want the fgs then you could try them and see if you like them before spending 50 quid and finding out they don't work for you

Cheers sausage, theres a couple of test centres on the coast near me so ill give some a shot next time theres a wave. I was always a bit sceptical of doing this as i found it hard to believe that there would be much difference in someting thats physically quite similar. Ive heard, as you said it can change the board dramatically so itll be worth looking and trying fins to see for myself.
Ive been told that a smaller and more flexy fin will achieve a more loose effect, im 5'11'' and 12.5-13 stone (cant remember exacltly, so dont think i should try something too small. cheers sausage

i'm about the same size as you and i use the K2.1 and like the idea of having a smaller center fin as it does loosen the board up quite a bit.

Eggs aren't that loose, it might be time for a new board.

I like the k2.1's and the k3's, both are way looser due to the smaller middle fin. Also, try the GYU setup, also a smaller center fin. One slight warning, I'm a heavy surfer and the smaller middle fin caused me some slip on steep waves, mostly the tail would slip out.

I use GMB and the PG5's as my go-to fins.

is there a way to make a board with glassed in fins tighter? My board is really loose. While it's great for doing tailslides, my tail tends to slide out when i try do power carves sometimes.

Not really, you could pay some big bucks to either have new ones put in or replace them with FCS plugs, about $100 at a shop, but every change adds weight and takes away aestetic value and the original purpose of the board. Sell it, or buy a bigger one and save this one for when you get better.

Ill change fins regularly, depending on board and swell.
Get off the 5's and start getting into the performance range like s25's or k fins etc. Soar also make some great fins that fit straight into the fcs plugs.

Is there? maybe. Here's the difference between a K2.1 and a G5...

(black outline is the G5)
Will it make that big a change, some seem to think so.
I had a similar situation with a 6'4" egg, but it had glassed on sides and rear in a short box.
Wanna loosen it up for free? Take out the rear.

Disagree completely!!! The difference is not only in the size, the narrower tip will release easier than an M5, and it is made slightly thinner (check out specs at their website), these give it less drag and more drive.

Also, this advice is for loosening up a funboard/minimal, the smaller center fin will accomplish that...
