Driver's Test nervousness

Postby Beachbum » Tue Mar 17, 2009 7:24 am

I have my behind-the-wheel test coming up in two days, and It's nerve racking. I have been practicing, but parallel parking seems iffy at the moment, but I can't seem to get over this nervousness. Hopefully I'll do everything else fine, and get lucky with the parallel.

This is how I was taught.
1. pull up to vehicle, line up bumpers.
2. Turn steering wheel all the way to the right and reverse.
3. start to turn left while driving slowly, and turn tighter as the front of my vehicle makes around the back of the vehicle in front.
4. somehow straighten out without hitting curb.

1. Pull up next to spot that may or may not be big enough for the vehicle.
2. Whilst still looking at surf, put vehicle into reverse, and go backwards a bit.
3. Turn vehicle into space.
4. Go forward a bit realising that wasn't right, and maybe this time you should look where you're going rather than at the surf.
5. Go backwards again, and this time really overdo it and go in at almost 90' to kerb.
6. Hit kerb.
7. Go forward one inch. Turn wheel all the way round.
8. Slide wheel and hubcaps along kerb.
9. Shuffle back and forth about 15 times. Hit bumpers of cars forward and behind 15 times.
10. Thats close enough, give up.

lol

Just keep practising lots before the test... knowing that you CAN do it should help your nerves. Think positive. If all else fails you could try "bach's rescue remedy". Not sure if you can get hold of it in the US? It's a natural liquid available in a little brown pot in most health food stores - you put a few drops on your tongue and it really does work... I'm really sceptical about stuff like that but I was persuaded to try it once before a job interview and I figured I had nothing to lose, so i did and it really calmed me down! I used it every time I had an interview or an assessment at work and I now swear by it!

good luck beachbum!

If its any consolation i managed to pass my driving test without any ability to parallel park or think in reverse generally!! There are plenty of people from this forum who have seen real life evidence of this to back me up :D :D

On a more serious note, dont stress, its one of the few tests in your life you can retake as often as you like! Good luck!

Thanks for the words of encouragement, and drowningbitbybit, I could imagine that hypothetical situation happening to me.

My new obstacle is my mom. Being so overprotective, she thinks everything imaginable is going to happen to me.... How do I pass her test? lol
