pop-up techniques

Postby learner surfer 1 » Mon Mar 16, 2009 7:44 am

Sorry for posting another thread but was wondering if anyone has any tips for poping up on a 6'4 shortboard. I have no problems getting out to the waves, sitting, duckdiving or abything but i just cant seem to pop-up. This is my first board ever have only been surfing for 2 weeks probably gone about 6 times. i tried catching whitewash but the board just sank when i tried to stand up so then i went to the lineup and i caught as many waves as anyone else but i just couldnt stand up. Maybe im waiting too long and it should be an automatic thing? :(

you need to be riding something bigger. pop ups on shortboards aren't forgiving at all. you have to be quick, smooth, and deliberate. if you hesitate at all, you're not going to catch the waves/pop up and make it. and if you're off by a bit, you're probably going to eat it. so get out there on something that is a 7'3" or bigger, depending on your size too. many people have learned on shortboards, so it's not impossible. but you really have to stick with it and not get discouraged.

the board sinking in the whitewash means either 1) you're too big for the board or b) the board is the right size for you, weight wise, but the conditions aren't right. both would be corrected with a bigger board, mini mal or longboard.

get the pop up motion down on land. then just keep at it in the water. that's the only way you'll be able to. as soon as you feel the wave start to take you, take maybe one more strong stroke, and up to your feet. you really need to be up far on a shortboard but also arching your back a lot so you don't pearl. you just have to make your standup a lot quicker on a shortboard, and that just comes with time. so get out there and keep at it
