Surf trip advice?

Postby Don_Alessandro » Sat Mar 07, 2009 7:34 pm

Hi there,

a couple of friends of mine and me (we are 4 in total) are planning a somewhat spontaneous surf trip and would therefore really appreciate some good advice/suggestions.

We're planning on going for a 1-2 week surf trip in the time period 03.04.09 - 30.04.09 (know it's not la bit of a short notice to get the cheapest flights and best offers). Departure airport should be anywhere in the UK, and preferred surf destination is anywhere in europe.

We're having quite a hard time to find any good, cheap flights, and I was simply wondering if anybody out there got any brilliant ideas to cheap flights or destinations? Whether it's suggestions to alternative transportation.. or perhaps an airline which has completely gone under our radar, we would be very thankful for any help!

Thank you.

Cheap flights with boards are very tricky :?

The budget airlines will either flatly refuse or charge a fortune to take your boards. And some of the major airlines arent any better (yes, BA, I mean you).

Maybe pool your funds, buy a van, and do a roadtrip to spain/portugal, then flog the van on your return?

drowningbitbybit: Thank you for the advice. The van idea sounds like a pretty good idea, but quite a bit of work (with car purchase, mot, etc)

Does anybody have any good advice on cheap alternative flights or destinations?

if you dont mind driving up there in a campervan there are rental places all over the country where you can hire them for a week. I think some places even let you drop them off in other European countries. Alternatively you could get a train down. Dont ask for any campervan rental sites because i dont know any, just google it, theres bound to be something. You could always just go to Ireland for a week. Cheap, pretty much guaranteed waves and close by.

Hi!
Indeed it's a "bit of a short notice to get the cheapest flights and best offers".
<edit>

Though, I need to know some more trip details in order to give you a proper advice. Like: what's your surf level? are u traveling with your boards? what are your priorities(waves, sun, night life, landscape, price)?
Based on your comments, I can suggest you some surf camps in Portugal. On that time of year it should be really sunny and active living...

For now, my advice is check Easy Jet (without boards) or TAP (travelling with boards) because they have reduced the prices for surfboards bagage! If you want more <edit>

Hope to hear from you.
Have a nice surftrip!
