Shortboard size? 5'6" 130 lbs

Postby inakura » Sat Feb 21, 2009 1:20 am

Hey guys I am 5'6" 130 lbs ride SD/socal waves and would consider myself an intermediate surfer. I was wondering what a normal or common pu shortboard size would be for me? I started on a 6'3" pu and then got a 5'8" epoxy. I'm not sure if I would get enough paddle out of the 5'8" pu although I know plenty of guys riding boards shorter than them. I appreciate the advice thanks!

5'8' is perfect once you are an advanced surfer, you are just not ready yet, keept it for later. With and thickness are important too, so please post them along with the length.

For a guy your size I would have gone with a 6'1 x 19 1/4" x 2 3/8", just enough beef to make it stable but not too big.

Thanks for the reply. I messed up my post a little before. I am currently riding a 5'8 epoxy quad and ride it pretty well. I can get in descent turns, still working on the snap. I was thinking about getting a 5'8 x 18 x 2 pu thruster just for days I feel like riding something different. I was just wondering if there would be that big of a difference between the buoyancy and stability of a 5'8 pu vs a 5'8 epoxy which would require me to size up.

Oh, different question all together.

My 6'3" epoxy floats as much as my 6'5" PU, both feel about the same on a wave but the epoxy is a little stiffer, but also dings less.

get a 5'6 fish, surfing different boards will improve your surfing alot and they're perfect for SoCal waves. try not to get stuck in the "i'm only ever going to ride a short board because the pros do" frame of mind. kelly is breaking the moulds, even borrow a mates fish it'll give you a totally different perspective and teach you to rip harder on your shorty.
