Surfing with a Sore throat??!

Postby sweatthesalt » Wed Feb 11, 2009 5:40 pm

So, i woke up this morning to a wonderful sore and achy throat. i can barley talk because its so closed up. and since i never get sore throats, i cant remember the last time i had one, i had a question. so what i am wondering my fellow aqautic brethren is would surfing with it be a bad idea? we are having some really good swell come in tomorrow, and i dont want to miss it. would this effect my throat and make things worse?

and does having a sore throat effect how much energy your body is having? like i dont feel tired, but maybe once i start paddling, ill realize it or somethin?

anyway thanks for your answers! :woot:

could take a bottle of water with you (not in the sea before you say it) and get out for a drink whenever you need. had a bad throat the start of this week and surfed twice but seems to be the same as it was, not worse but then that depends if you have tonsillitis might be a bit worse

Localised bacterial infection - no, probably wont effect your energy.

Viral infection - yes, you'll be knackered before you know it.

How to tell the difference? Viral infection will be accompanied by fever, aches, mild flu like symptoms (and if you dont have them now, you will after surfing). Bacterial infection will be accompanied by green mucus gross stuff.

Intense exercise is likely to make any infection worse, but to be honest, if I felt up to going in the water, I'd just get in there.

i was just wondering this a week ago, weird. unless it's really great or something, i'd probably just wait it out.

Interesting enough, one time I did not go surfing due to a sore throat and ended up going to the doctor, she recommended a saline gargle...
