Okay, I'll try and answer your "trees" issues the way I see it! In Europe there are plenty trees, but you usually only find them on the lower sunnier slopes and usually flatter areas. The more important part here is the lower slopes. You often find that lower slopes are slightly warmer so the snow gets slushy in the afternoon and freezes over night leaving you with that horrible ice crystal snow. Therefore when there is no fresh snow the best is found up high where is doesn't melt.

There are exceptions to this, mainly when there is great snow which I am going to try and demonstrate........

No trees in NZ - the native species don't grow that high up. If there's any vegetation it's tussock grass, but usually it's just shale and big rocks. Makes for some awesome terrain but it sucks when it gets murky.

A few picks from Zermatt!!

The best resort, and also the most expensive one I've been to!!
Seriously a medium sized take away pizza cost me £20! Great apres ski and awesome Swiss girls...........

The off-piste was fantastic, I didn't take too many pictures when the snow was fresh and powdery, but you can see on the first picture, where I'm tweaking the Matterhorn, the tracks just off the edge of the piste at the top of the main lift!!

And here is a link to a short video of me not quite getting it right in Morzine (note the trees).

For your info, that's is a 5 metre long picnic table I come off, there is a very busy chair lift right above the landing and though you can't see it on the video there were loads of people hanging around the landing area (plenty people to laugh at me). So the speed I was going I didn't have enough space to stop and was only able to avoid the spectators on the ground.

That's my excuses out the way, enjoy.

they both made me laugh, you can see why people come back from their winter hols with a cast on their leg.

There are also some great pictures on this topic.

Yeah we were both lucky, erm skillful enough not to hit the trees full on
Actually this is the first holiday where I've come back without any injuries. I think I've got good at falling!
