Help - e-commuter - surfer - where?

Postby sarahm00 » Mon Feb 02, 2009 4:06 am

Hi all,

I'm a 32 yo female, intermediate surfer who is lucky enough to be able to do their job anywhere where there is a reliable high speed internet connection. Am currently spending the winter skiing in interior BC, Canada and am looking to do the same sort of thing this summer - but surfing. SO my question to you wise souls is - where would you go if you were me?

The place needs
- highspeed internet, intermediate waves

Ideally the place would be
- consistent (hah!), cheap, safe, warm, with a laid back, interesting vibe (I'm not a massive partier), not massively packed (although I'm realistic)

Some places I'm thinking of would be Gold Coast, or Maui - but neither are particularly cheap. There must be places in Costa Rica? But i've never been there so am not sure if the surf spots are too remote. Europe worries me for cost. Someone mentioned Egypt? But that doesn't seem right to me.

Spanish speaking would be a plus.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!
Sarah

Australia is yet to work out what a proper download speed is, so if you need high speed internet, you might need to look elsewhere.

If you go to Indonesia, there's a pretty good internet connection almost anywhere. They're called internet rental or cafe. You pay by the hour. Accommodation is cheap too. Warm water all year round. You should give it a thought :)

Hey Sarah,

We have place in the Dominican Republic. the nearby village is called Cabarete and it's the closest accommodation to the Surfspot Encuentro.
Cabarete is a really fun place, You will find lot's of friendly people. Foreigners but also the locals are very relaxed and helpful.
Internet access is fast and reliable so thats no problem. We have wifi at our place so many of our quests bring their laptops. On average people stay 2 or 3 weeks here, but we have also sometimes people staying for a month or 2. We offer special rates for longer term rental. Last summer we had somebody staying who worked as a graphical designer, she stayed here for 2 months and had a great time. She surfed in the mornings and worked in the afternoons.
Next to the whole surf and kitesurf scene Cabarete has a lot to offer. Nightlife, restaurants, trips into the amazing country and lot's of culture. Flights are cheap and life also...

Anyway, I am living here for already 4 years now and still think the DR is one of the most versatile and amazing countries I have been.

Nice to be able to work and live in Paradise :-)
