check out these epoxy repair pics

howzit fellow heads?

i've always only surfed fiberglass boards, but recently came across this gem epoxy board at a garage sale. talked him from 50 bucks down to 35 bucks, and here's the damage: two fractures, one on the side of the rail in the middle of the board, the other on the side of the rail by the nose. it appears that the previous owner attempted some kind of spackle repair job of sorts (looks like concrete) but it has mostly worn away, revealing the cracks. other than these two spots this board seems to be in otherwise good shape.

i picked up this epoxy repair kit (see pics) for cheap, and since the damage seems pretty substantial i wonder if it is good enough to fix such a big crack. i really want to try and fix it just for a beater extra board...can it be fixed?

what should i do with this board?

lol he hasn't glassed it :D

Your repair kit will do the job but you'll need some filler and glass too.

Clean all the old gunk out. Carefully remove loose glas (sharp knife). Fill with a more apporpriate filler ("red devil" spackle or microballons in an epoxy slurry) and let it set. Sand it gently back to rail shap. Rough sand the whole area. Epoxy some glass over it. That's the rough repair done.

Tape off and area about 1/2" to 1" around as a resivouir and gloss over it with more epoxy (the "glad wrap" trick is good here).

the guy just used epoxy putty, it's only good for punctures, it's rather useless for cracks. Using superglue for cracks or small chips is good enough

Boatcote and west systems are pretty widely available along with a number of others.

If you have a good local surf shop (one with a shaper) you should be able to get some advice from them on what's locally available.

The other option is the yellow pages. Start with local boatbuilders. The guys who build composite yaughts. It'll take a few calls but start each call with "Hi! I am trying to find a decent epoxy..." and go from there. There are other categories that can help too.

Most countries have soemwhere you can order over the phone. If you get stuck tell me what country you are in and hopefully one of my partners from http://www.compsand.com/ are in the same country and can tell me where they buy theirs.
