Hi @ all, I'm moving to the Daytona Beach area soon and want to take up surfing. What kind of board should I buy for the wave conditions that are there? I'm about 5'10" and weigh around 140. Thanks!

A longboard and a fish. Buy local.

A longboard. Buy what you can afford.

fixed. you don't need a fish as a beginner. get the longboard, and get really comfortable with it. then move to a traditional shortboard (if you want), then get a fish (if you want).

i prefer to buy locally shaped boards, but when it comes down to it, my bank account speaks louder. first, go to local surf shops and look through the used racks for a longboard 8-9 feet long. don't be afraid to talk to the guys there either. ask about boards they use for rentals/lessons. don't be afraid of bic's, nsp's, or softops. they are not the best boards, but when it comes to something that's going to be beat up a bit and just for starting, it's not a bad place. they're easy to find, very durable, and relatively cheap. who doesn't want to save a few bucks in this economy? scour craigslist as well. no need to get a custom shaped board yet. as long as you buy something from a local surf shop/person, you're still helping them out buy putting money into their pockets
