Sri Lanka Surfing

Postby Richbelucky » Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:44 pm

Hi,

I'm planning on going travelling in September and hoping to make it a surf tour, thinking of starting in Sri Lanka and heading east. Has anyone got any info or could anyone give me the low-down on surfing in Sri Lanka? I'll be heading out in April and wont be taking a board with me so will need to hire or buy out there.

Any info would be really appreciated,

Hope its all good,

Many thanks

Hi Rich,
I've been to Sri Lanka few years ago.
Surfing out there is really fun but small, you'll probably a bit diapointed if you're looking for big hollow pits !
No many surf shops to rent boards you should go with at least one
People are the nicest personn i've ever met, really humble, always shinny and smiling.
The country is amazingly beautifull with dream beaches, jungle and mountains.
I rent room at Midigama subobenee guest house ! really nice and quite chip place.
hope this will help
Best regards

Hi thanks mate, no barrels is fine, as long as there's some decent waves to ride I'l be happy; surfing in a beautiful place is just as important. Really looking forwards to it!

Thanks mate,

Rich

Hiya,

Went to Sri Lanka about 6 years ago now... we toured around for the first week just sightseeing the place which was absolutely beautifull... then went to the east coast and drove all the way down to Hikkaduwa... that´s where we stayed in the Coral Gardens Hotel... really nice only a few minutes walk from the surfspots. At the time (we went before Sunami) there was a Surfschool / Rental place right on the beach and also a cafe. They also organised like Surfari trips to spots which were further away.

My husband surfs and went for really early sessions and then afternoon sessions... the waves were never huge but he caught some real fun waves and did love the atmosphere there... the people are soo friendly and they will help you if they can... there are also some guesthouses onthe beach but not sure what they are like...

Sri Lanka is definately a place to recommend... maybe not epic surf like other places in Asia could offer you but definately worth a visit.

We never made it to Arungam Bay as we were there during the wrong season for the east coast to work.

Enjoy...
