What are the best uni's in the UK for surfing?

Postby sweet_ride » Mon Jan 12, 2009 5:27 pm

I'm aware that Swansea is an excellent place as it it very very close to the beach. It also had the added bonus of having the campus all in one place rather than spread throughout the city like some other uni's do. Do you guys know of any other good uni's where it is close to good surf?

I dont want to live in some shizhole for the next 3 years so social life, close proximity to beach, ease of access to places such as shops, library etc are all important factors.

hope you guys can help. If you can name a uni, please state your reasons why this uni is good.

thanks.

Hey, just in that same situation last year - really wanted to go to a uni on the coast near some good surf. So, living near scarborough, i'd reccommend hull uni which i think has a campus in scarborough. Pretty sterling surf in the north east if you know where to look. And hull uni has a great performing arts department i've heard if that's what you want to study...
But i went for cardiff. Especially since i have wheels (touch wood they last until i go) there's the whole gower coast and south wales to surf. And cardiff does have a pretty good rep for both the uni and social life etc etc.
Looked at falmouth too for obvious reasons. I think anywhere in the south east would suit for surf needs. Lovely places down there too. Not sure about how good specific uni's are though.
What are you looking to study???

Newcastle uni!
-Newcastle is a bloody lovely city
-The uni is very nice, too- very pretty, and the courses are good. Library is huge! It's all campus based, so building not a massive treck apart.
-The Student Union is v. cheap & the range of societies is good. Student club night is a bit rubbish, though- we always generally go across the road to Northumbria Uni's night!
-Great night & day life. Shopping is impressive & there are lots of venues, clubs, bars & pubs. There are some right gems tucked around the city that serve amazing beers & food, as well as getting good bands. Generally not massively advertised, more word-of-mouth. I recommend: The Cluny, The Cooperage, Cumberland Arms. Also Newcastle has a MASSIVE mall called the Metro Centre.
-Public transport is actually really good- regular buses running til about 11pm, the under/overground metro is pretty cheap, too.
-Good music scene, we have a Carling Academy, as well as a lot of cool other venues like the Head of Steam, Metro Arena, The Cluny, Dog & Parrot, Other Rooms etc.
-Surfing scene: tynemouth obviously... and some 'secret spots' I would definitely recommend asking about ;)
-Surfing club. Not just windsurfers- surfers, too! And they have kit to lend & go out regularly
-There is also a rock climbing club that organisers trips out, and other more extreme sports like caving & skydiving
-1st yr halls are a bit old, but not skanky. They're fun. Other accommodation around, too- I was in the biggest, oldest halls nearer the campus, but there are some newer, nicer ones.

Also, if you don't fancy any courses at Newc uni, there is Northumbria Uni, which is basically opposite my campus.

So yeh, lots of reasons to go!

if you like surfing...swansea, if you have a car cardiffs an option and if you don't mind waiting around for a couple of weeks to get a good swell then newcastle is good. but not sure about the courses in any.

You hit the nail on the head first time. if you want to surf at uni then you cant do much better than swansea. the surf is so close it makes it really easy to fit it around lectures. the gower has so many surf options too from mellow beach breaks to shallow reefs and it it a genuinely beautiful place to be. the nightlife is what youd expect from any city and so is all the transport n things n stuff. im in my second year at swansea uni now and i love it. i looked at exeter, plymouth and southampton as well but i think just for convenience swansea is the best for surfing. oh and the campus is accross the road from the beach (unfortunately its swansea bay which doesnt get waves often if at all. good for bonfires in summer though)

plymouths ok if you have a car there are so many diffrent breaks to choose from, if you dont have a car then im not sure it would be best. plymouth is also has a few financial problems at the moment as well and have all ready lost lectures which has really screwed my course up.

Im at york uni - surfing at scarbourgh (takes about an hour) every sunday with the surf club along with added mid week sessions when the surfs up to it! Perfect for everyone. Campus uni. Big library. Collegate which makes it fun. 20 minute walk into the city centre.

Safe city.
