I wasn't sure what was controversial about it though?

Only criticism is that its too long. For what is, after all, a public safety message (and we all know how much we love them), few people would sit through 3 and 1/2 minutes of this video - I didnt. I skipped the middle bit, so I hope none of the girls in bikinis did anything particularly "controversial" during the bit I missed

Yes I have hear these rumours too...

From what I understand you can get a great amount of vitamin d from 30 mins outdoors. Also from foods such as fish oil (which is a great source) and other foods.

By the by, sun causes skin damage, its pretty evident after a long day in sunshine without sunscreen - that burning sensation? Can't be good for you really.

On the vitamin D part: this is true. You do get vast amounts of vitamin D if you get exposed to the sun. Here in south africa, by just walking to your car from the shops is enough. You also get vitamin D from butter by the way

The sun also helps acne believe it or not (proven by me and many other teenagers). But obviously this does not give anyone a permit to go and get burnt to burger spec. The sun still ages you and still causes cancer. period

Try listening to yourself old sport, you are sounding pretty stupid yourself.

For example you appear to think that your argument that the sun can cause cancer somehow proves that sunblocks don't cause cancer. . . . that is a pretty stupid attempt at an argument.

It is no coincidence that the rate of skin cancer is increasing while the rate of sunscreen use is also increasing. . . . it's partly because the sunscreens cause skin cancer !

A lot of the supposed 'proofs' that the sun causes skin cancer are nothing more than an assumption that if there is skin cancer it must have been caused by the sun. . .. this is a classic circular argument and doesn't work.

The massive publicity campaign regarding skin cancer has also led to doctors declaring that a lot of benign skin abnormalities are cancer, this increases the statistical rate of skin cancer even though many of the cases are not skin cancer at all.

What you eat, drink, or inhale can also be responsible for skin cancer, the skin is the third biggest elimination organ in the body, it excretes toxins all the time, and can suffer as a result. The amounyt of food additives most people eat is increasing at an incredible rate. . . food technologists are literally using food as a dumping ground for toxic industrial by products these are responsible for cancers including skin cancers.

I had a skin growth on my hand which was suppposedly a possibly pre cancerous growth. It has completely vanished due to a change in diet including the elimination of sugar, alcohol, food additives and grains . . . . the sun had nothing to do with it. If I had gone to the doctor with it they would have cut it off and listed another case of skin cancer for the scare mongers and toxic chemical vendors to use in order to prey upon the gullible public.

The stuff you call sunblock is a vile chemical cocktail, might as well spray yourself with herbicide.

well, i'll still wear sunblock to stop sunburn as i'm sure this must lead to cancer and its quite painful. surely if you get repetitively sunburn then this leads to cancer

Listen dudes. Iv done most of my surfing in the carribean. If you dont want to come out of the water looking like a beetroot, the only solution is to smear a thick layer of zinc oxide paste over your face. You sure look silly but it works, it doesnt get into your eyes and I suppose its the equivalent of painting your face white. For your back and body you use a rash vest, and for your arms any factor forty or above waterproof sunblock. If you dont do this you are mental.

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree with you about some of what you are saying, especially stuff about the food industry filling our food with industrial by-products and some other of your comments. I do disagree with what you are asserting about sunblock being the actual cause of skin cancer. Generally when stuff gets passed down from scientists into like "common folklore" there are fairly good reasons for it, ie it has been studied quite carefully and a causative correlation established. Its like "smoking cigarettes definitiley causes lung cancer" this means that to a statistically significant level there is a correlation between smoking and lung cancer. The people who do the epidemiology are pretty rigorous about what they do and they have to be. This is because within a population of people there are a random distribution of different cases. so for example there will be people who smoke 200 fags a day for seventy years that dont get lung cancer and some that smoke 0 fags that do. The whole issue of epidiemiology is extremely complex and statistically based.

Anyway the point is (and I havent personally read the specific journals in this case): that by the time something like this gets to the point of a public health authority advisory the case for a direct correlation is pretty strong. That is the basis of public health advisories, if this gets translated by the media etc to "sun causes skin cancer" then that is strictly speaking misleading. But have you ever considered why you have hair on the top of your head? Even in tropical countries this is the case so its not entirely about the reduction of heat loss from your head. Think about it.

If so then it's not much of an argument.

Prior to the existence of officially concocted statistical 'truths' did people know anything ? In my opinion they did, using their own faculties and in my opinion it is possible to be aware of truths which are not part of the official lore, and even which oppose the official lore.

Plus it's a fact that most official 'studies' are funded by commercial enterprises in order to protect their own interests, and in doing so the studies often carefully hide the truth or warp it, so that they can keep selling stuff.

Also I didn't say that sunblock is THE cause of cancer I said that sunblock can cause cancer, so can environmental toxins and food additives.

Thats fair enough. You should endevour to find all the facts and also its sensible to trust your own instincts. I fully understand a mistrust of research funding. But I also understand that when the public health administrations get hold of bits of research where there is shown to be a statistical correlation between exposure to high levels of UV and skin cancers, it is entirely sensible on their part to issue an advisory to the public to limit their exposure to potentially harmful UV radiation. After all who pays the bill for the treatment of the said skin camcers, in the UK its public health.

The statistics probarbly say that there is a significant risk of skin cancer from high UV exposure, the health authority therefore say that they reccomend reducing exposure to UV. Its probable that some people are particularly susceptible to skin cancer so the health authority are right to issue an advisory since they dont know the genetic makeup of every single member of the population. They are just issuing advice afterall.

And I dont know if sunblocks cause skincancer. I must admit that having read the contents of some sunblocks that I am personally dubious about spreading them over my body. My general strategy for sun is to cover up or use zinc oxide paste when surfing. Sunblock just converts sunlight to heat anyway so it just makes you hotter so I dont like it. I tend to either stay out of direct sunlight, cover up, or use the white paint stuff when surfing. I also try to surf early morning or late evening too.

Yes that's what we try to do as well.

For vitamin D absorption it's best to expose as much of the skin as possible for 20 minutes or so rather than just a small portion (like the face) for hours on end.

As for public health warnings, they are based on commercial interests, and are suspect.

You should try listening to your self too "old sport". That's the biggest contradicton right there!

Also you confirm in an earlier statement that sunblock gives you cancer, then deny it later on. To say that anything with chemicals in it is a "vile concoction" is a gross assumption and to compare sunblock to a herbicide is laughable.

Whether your argument is true or not is irrelevant as you obviously don't understand what you're talking about. Why don't you post some evidence, i.e. links, on your theory then we can make up or own minds.

There could be numerous other reasons, more holidays to Spain and other hot countries since the 70's, added to that problems with the ozone layer......

You're the only one saying that skin cancer is linked to toxins in sunblock, therefore it is your theory on this forum.
