What do you eat before going for a surf?

Postby Heathen » Sat Jan 17, 2009 7:01 am

Well I am looking good foods to eat before going for a surf couple of hour before or what ever mainly to get energy and keep you energized for longer for morning surfs I have been trying to eat bananas and cereal.

Just would like to know what everyone else eats or good food you have found for energy or even just what you like to eat good or bad.

I am not really a health freak but since I have been surfing have started to think about eating good foods before I go out instead of eating a mince and cheese pie on the way and a energy drink

Nothing.
I cant surf for sh** if Ive got a full stomach. I normally have a small amount of food (couple of apples) an hour before surfing, and then survive on sports drinks for as long as possible.

Inevitably I yield at lunchtime and eat a rubbish burger or something... and then my surfing goes completely to pot after lunch

Yer I try not to eat before going out or if I do I have something small but say I am going out 10am will have a good feed at maybe 7-8.

I always seem to eat rubbish after a surf come out really hungry and off for some burgers or something.

I eat porridge for breakfast before a surf, and a couple of bananas on the way to the beach. Usually though I eat a couple hours before I actually get in, by the time I've got all my gear sorted and driven to the break. Last time I was in at puts I ate a pasty before going in, worst thing I could have done.

Pint of coffee and a couple of fags normally. Food interferes with the fit of my wetsuit and the coffee provides an extra warm up half an hour after paddling out.

something basic at least an hour (should be way before) a surf. ie) bread, simple sandwich, etc. I heard that bananas have tons of energy in them, but have never tried.

ive taken to drinking milk, it seems to help with the vast amounts of salt water i end up ingesting...probably no science to it, but it sure feels better for me.

I surf in the morning because bluebottles come to my break in the afternoon. So I reckon a good breakfast is great for morning surfers...e.g. one time at a surf lesson it was really rough out there so before I ate a big breakfast...more energy. That time I had toast (for carbohydrates, in my first session) and roast chicken (protein for the second session) and a drink just before so that I wouldn't dehydrate.

It's really up to you what you eat, but make sure you feel OK going into the surf with it.

Once at a surf lesson two of the kids doubled the half time rest by eating a LOT. That was  :( because the surf was perfect that day.

I usually don't eat right before going surfing.

Same here: nothing. Makes the breakfast taste even better afterwards...

If I have to do the 2-3 hour drive to get to the surf then I'll snack on bananas and cereal bars on the way.

if it's a dawn patrol, maybe a bagel and some coffee from the local shop. the brew is properly called 'dawn patrol,' the strongest they got. or tea instead, depends how sleepy i am. after, maybe some taco bell or kfc. whatever puts calories in my body. avoid 7/11 death-dogs

Coffee makes me thirsty.

Have got some really good vogels bread going to try that with marmite trying to find a balance food that stop you from getting the hunger pains after being in the surf for 30 minutes but is not to filling and gives you energy seem the toast is the way to go.

And lol at kfc for some reason If I come out hungry always feel like kfc.

As far as energy goes I have noticed if i go surfing for more then 2 days in a row the third day I am really tired I have only been surfing for 3 weeks so got a long way to go fitness wise but yer seems I need a day off after 2 days.
But guess it depends on the size of the surf as well.

been flat as here for days and the tides are not in my favor for going before or after work will be good again after today hopefully there some waves have not been out for 3 days feels like 2 weeks :(

A kiwi and a fresh fig, some porridge, an egg or two and green mint tea. With that, you have vitamins, fiber, carbs, protein and warm fluids.

I take a bottle of water, dried figs and a kiwi to the beach to munch on sparingly for recharging and to stave off the low blood sugar funk. You can eat them without removing your gloves and get right back in the water.

kfc rules. big box meal. so tasty. and you get a ton of food for how much you pay for. and a huge cup of sweet tea is always stellar after a session.

my caloric intake over the summer explodes. i never counted it, but it's got to be huge. and i some how lose weight. breakfast is usually just oatmeal, cereal, or granola bars. lunch is some sort of fast food or something i pick up from harris teeter (semi-local supermarket). dinner is something huge. a bunch of pasta, red beans and rice, steaks, or something else that's super filling and makes me get the itis. then dessert is a bunch of ice cream. not to mention snacking on random stuff throughout the day. kayaking and surfing all day really works up the appetite
