Jockey, the good news is that Florida has so much tourism that automobiles are cheap to rent. Food prices are low simply because it's a state having lower cost of living. Petrol is lower, too, for the same reason.

Use this page to check a bunch of cheap rentals at one time:
www.sidestep.com/h/landing?w=rent+a+wre ... oduct=cars

Here are two of the cheaper car rental companies in the US:
www.dollar.com
www.Enterprise.com

Sometimes you can find a deal at:
www.Hotwire.com

You might also search for Rent A Wreck and Ugly Duckling. They rent used cars, once were widespread, but have experienced business contraction during the past 5 years. If they exist, they will be cheap, but not necessarily conveniently located.

jockey, Orlando (O Town) is a very good starting point because it is a huge tourist area. This provides low costs for hire autos, food, hotel, etc. It also has lots of services. I'd suggest you initially go a little north of O Town to Daytona Beach first. Visit the Daytona race track. It has a cool little museum and store. It won't take long. Be sure to go into the water at Daytona Beach. A bit farther south and east of O Town is Cocoa Beach. There you should be able to catch some long board waves near the pier. There are two huge surf stores there open 24 hour per day (Cocoa Beach Surf Co. and Ron Jon's). These are always fun to go in. These are all places I usually go when I go to visit my mother in O Town. Another "must do" while in this area is the Kenneday Space Center at Cape Canaveral. It's worth every penny of the admission price and you should spend at least one full day there. If you are lucky, you'll also see a space shuttle taking off.

When near the Keys in the south, go to John Pennekamp State Park. It's a snorkeling and diving place. For not too much money you can get a 1/2 or all day snorkel trip. The boat will take you to a variety of locations (ecosystems). The water is warm and gentle. You'll have a good time and see some cool stuff underwater. I once saw a 6 ft (2m) barracuda there!

If you are a literary type, then also go to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum while in the Keys. He was one of the US's greatest authors and bred 7-toed cats.

I always enjoy my visits to FL and hope you do, too.
