From Los Angeles to Trestles - Help

Postby brukuns » Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:29 pm

Hey everyone,
in a week from now i'm moving to LA for 6 months... I'll be staying at playa vista... it's almost at Marina Del Ray, and very close to Venice Beach.

Let me explain my situation. I don't know anybody, won't have much money, and won't have a car. nevertheless, I wanna surf in Trestles on the weekends or whenever i get a chance.

Can anyone let me know how far Trestles is from where I'm staying. I'd also like to know any useful information, like what's the best route I should take. Bus, Train? I see that there's a train line right besides Trestles. is that a good option?

thanks in advance!

I don't know where the closest train stop to trestles is....Ventura, and Rincon are probably just as close, and winter is upon us, you will not find a better wave on our coast than a good winters day at the con. There is a train stop in Ventura....best bet is to make some friends...with cars!!

Yeperini,,, Ventura and Rincon are just as close and with winter swell heading in the Ventura/Ox is facing the north swell. Rincon is a nice place with great waves. Trestles has allways got some waves at one of the points. As for trains ?? it's an all day trip to just take a train and we don't have good public transportation here (especialy with surfboard in hand) and as for bringing a log on public trans,,, (forgetaboutit) The farthest I go If I'm taking a train is to Morepark about an hour short of Ventura/Oxnard by car (but I'm only up there to go to our avacado grove. I have no idea of the train stops around Trestles,, I do know the train rail goes right by Trestles (200 meters away) so you could allways jump,,, ha ha jus kiddn,, well mabie not,,, but the runnin and catching the return trip might be a problem. All in all unless your gonna surf the area your able to bike/walk to then it's (vehicle needed) L.A. is not public transportation friendly. From Marina Del Ray your looking at an 1 1/2 hr trip if you leave at 5 a.m. in a car any later ,,, well, um,, welcome to L.A. 405 trafic and posibly a 3 hr trip or more!!! Even to get to South Bay (Redondo/Hermosa) area on public trans your looking at a 1 hr min trip one way for a couple of bucks.

Best thing is what Parry said find some buds and carpool to some spots.

As for costs San O is $10.00 day pass Trestles is free parking with a complementary mile long walk, and 90% of all other spots are meter/parking lot pay for about $3.00 for a couple of hrs. Where to put your stuff,,well on the beach San O and Trestles are cool and everybody else has to do the same thing, so no worries, as for the outher spots well I bring as little as possible but I have vehicles to leave my outher junk in so if your footin it you'll just have to take the risk of your stuff sittin on the sand.

6 months of public transportation costs might add up to a cheap used car wich would benefit you a ton more.

Perrysurf is right, that area is well knowen for it's epic winter surf. But it's defenitly worth coming down to Trestles a weekend or two. It wont be flat as long as there's some swell.

Train travel might be a good option. I don't know much about the system there's two different passenger Trian companies MTA and another. You'll have to do your homework on that.
The problem is how to get the rest of the way to Trestles from San Clemente. I'm 10 min. from Trestles, if you PM me, we could exchange contact info and even if I can't join you I could probably pick you up and drop you off.

Camping right on the beach isn't allowed. There are some State campgrounds in the area San Mateo is the closest.

At Trestles I leave my surf pack pack on the beach when I'm in the water. In 20 years I haven't had a problem. I've only known 2 occasions that people have gotten there stuff taken (don't try to hide it)

If I find some helpful links I'll forward them on

As always you guys are extremely helpful!

Since I need to make some friends, might as well start doing so here! I'll have to check the public transportation to those beaches as soon as I get there, but i see that I should look for a car. Gas is currently cheap if I read correctly, so I guess my next question would be looking for tips on buying a used car. I have no idea where to look.

do you guys think I can find a good (by good my mean, one that won't break every month and cost me a fortune to get it fixed) used car for around 900 bucks?

NO !! 900.00 bones means you'll be spending 1,500 in repairs. look at spending about 1,500 for a good clunker but there are some worthy cars for 900 to 1,000 bucks. ha ha bro you've allready started meeting peeps to surf with ha ha ha Parry is north of me and SC is south so just from the three of us you have a huge area in any direction. Your not to far from me I'm in South Bay about 30 min from your location and we'll set up some meet times and I'll take you with me to some breaks.

And yea gas is cheaper,,, for right now anyways.

Awesome!! Can't wait to know the breaks you guys surf. I always heard SoCal has one of the best waves around!

This is supposed to be a work travel, but all I'm worrying about is finding the right spots, and being able to surf on a daily basis!

See you guys in December!

Try craigslist for used cars, surf buddies, etc.

Wait till the crowd gets in, its not fun. THere is a reason why indo and socal are different. One is almost empty and the other is a pack of angry crowd.
Waves are good depending on the spot, like every spot, the condition needs to spot up.

Yeah, 900 is gonna get you a budget ride, but it can be found. If you have a bit more, or get a good deal on a decent old grandma car, you can sell it when you leave. You would have free transpo...or cheap as possible. Craigslist is the hot tip on used cars and boards/gear.
Wetsuit should be 4/3...unless you are warm blooded like me and get by with a 3/2.

900 can get you a lot of rental days with a good car, and no hassle..there are some super deals with the bad economy

If you have some time for Ventura I would be happy to show you the spots, you can PM me & we can trade info

I'm almost convinced of buying used car... gotta look for those grannies! My fear is that i won't be able to sell the car in time to go back home... do you guys have experience in selling cars over there?? do you think a month is more than enough to sell a car as long as i put up a good deal?

regarding the wetsuit, trust me, I'm not warmblooded... I think I'll buy a 4/3 and still freeze my balls off.

The only thing that turns me off about rentals is that I will still be spending money with public transportation, so in the end i will have spent more than 2 grand. not good. but I'll probably look into some rentals on the first few weeks.

and yeah, I definitely wanna hit Ventura, heard there are some great spots over there also! soon I will start googleing for which swells are good for which places... gotta know your swell.

alrighty, looking forward to surf with you guys! I guess that starting before christmas I will have some time off of work, so that's an opportunity to surf some further away spots, like trestles and ventura.

see you guys in the water!
