Every tried surfing goofy if you are natural or vise verse?

Postby surfaMIKE » Tue Nov 18, 2008 3:45 pm

Im working on it, and I can finally do it. Im a natural, and the other day I decided to surf goofy on a left...bailed obviously, but after some practice, I got it right. Went today and the waves were weak, so I decided to have some fun and surf goofy on every left...pretty tricky, but fun

Is this a good idea? Because I think it makes you a more versitile surfer, only problem is you get kinda confused sometimes and dont know whether to go natural or goofy and end up going over the falls  haha, but its all part of the fun

So has anyone else tried this? If so, do you think its a good thing to do?

haha unny enough, i was on the BUS........getting ready to "alight" when it jerked sharply...I put myy right foot forward to stop me going "over the falls" it made me wonder......I normally surf with my left out front...but might it be worth a try the other way if my instincts took me to my right???

will give it a go this weekend.

i started off surfing goofy - could pop up and ride a green face - however it never felt right and so i switched to regular and now all is good

i've wondered about this too, i learned to stand on a surfboard regular, then went snowboarding and found myself to definitely a goofy rider, went to do more surfing, attempting to go goofy, thinking, when i eventually learn to ride the green face, that i'll be better that way, but quickly tired of tryin to pop up goofy so went back to regular, at this stage, natural feels right on the surfboard, and goofy on the snowboard, i hope thats ok and im not making a big mistake......

I switch. It usually occurs without much thought, but have noticed:
a. gentle surf usually surfed as goofey
b. rough surf/larger waves surfed as natural

There are surfers that consciously change based on wave direction. I'm not that clever

I'd like to try it... for me it's insanely difficult to pop up regular (I'm goofy) but sometime when I have my longboard out and the waves are mellow I'd like to start working on it. Be nice, especially surfing my fish always on rights... I'd be stoked to be able to surf it regular now and then!

Oh, Aaron, I have a bro who skateboards goofy and snowboards regular... I don't think it's a mistake if it feels right!

I'll definitely give it a shot. Here in Sao Paulo, at least in Sao Pedro where I surf there are mostly lefts... since I'm regular footed, it really sucks. being able to surf goofy would be awesome!

reckon the left side of my body is handicapped or something so doubt i'd be able to ever pop up goofy... took ages to learn to go left but can just about do it now. still way better on rights... find delicate trimming really awkward on my backhand.
one of my mates is regular and only goes left... he doesn't drive so i keep bringing him to right breaks... pretty funny watching him turn left into the lip... you'd think after enough trashings he'd learn but he's not the most present of mind and can't help himself.

another mate switches footing depending on the direction of the swell... went away for 3 months in the van and came back able to do it. jealous as hell. if i'm not facing the wave i have a tendency to go too fast down the line and outrun the wave.

Ronin, u push with your back foot on the skate, then step into goofy? I had a friend like that, it's trippy looking. We called people who skate that that Mongo Footers for some reason... I don't know why.

surfing

surf both regular and goofy, it was not easy learning to surf goofy, it was like learning to surf all over again. also ride switch and goofy on the snowboard.

Yeah it's strange. It was particularly tough when I moved onto snowboarding. I had to learn to push goofy.

Mongo Footers haha I like that.

By the way, isn't surfing your opposite stance basically a fakie?

Nope, I rather try to improve my surfing than to start confusing myself

it snowed yesterday and amonst being cold I found
Oh-my-god-I-think-im-goofy!!

I did the usual childish 28yr onld thing and imediatly wend for a few skids on te way down to my bus this morning and noticed that whenever i did I instinctivly went right foot first.

so what does this all mean??? what!!!
really wish i could get out today to find out.

maybe i end up left foot first cos i just happened to put my leash on my right foot when i took my first lesson. who knows.
