Taiwan in April/May......

Hi everyone,
Was curious if anyone can feed mw some info on the likely hood of finding waves in Taiwan in April/May. I have been surfing for over 20yrs, so challenging breaks or larger swells are of no issue - actually be great to find!

Where is the best part of the country to suss out? Is renting a car the best way to explore? I notice travel between major centres is quick and cheap with the trains, but do they allow surfboards?

Any and all information will be appreciated! Surfing and non-surfing - as I know the chances of great waves in Taiwan is not guaranteed so really looking forward to exploring the place!

Oh and read somewhere they are pretty cool with camping etc near most beaches - how much does that cost?

I'm in Taiwan for some time now. But I've been surfing for only about 5 months.

Don't get excited about the swells here. There are some nice reef breaks on the south east coast. If you are going to be in Taipei - where I am - the closest break is in Yilan, there are 3 breaks there, all quite small. 1-3ft avg.

Other than that way south is where were all going to be headed this winter.

I'd tell you but I'd have to kill you... Honestly, if I said too much I'd have locals beating me down for spoiling local spots.
My advice is too stay away from the North and West and just head down the East coast. Highway 11 basically follows the coast all the way to Taidong and in the winter there are countless epic breaks you can either see from the road or find out by talking to locals (who are super friendly once you get south of Daxi).
Part of the fun of Taiwan is just seeking out the breaks yourself, which is hard if you live in Taipei but doable. Good luck and good surfs!
