Southpoint Board Advice Needed

By my username, you can probably tell I'm new to surfing and looking for my first board. Saw a Southpoint 8'4 epoxy pintail (KT) for a really good price. I'm about 195-200lbs, had a few lessons. Anyone think this will be a good first board to invest in? I know the longer boards are more stable, but figured this might be good for the smaller NJ surf too. Anyone have any advice?

I started out on an 8' WRV funshape, and i love the board, i still use it and to be honest it's probably my favorite board to surf on, I'm about the same weight as you and if you can get a good deal on it, I say go for it, never heard of Southpoint, but I'm sure it will do you alright...uh, you might want to consider staring out with a fiberglass board, though (I just looked at your post again and realized it was an epoxy board), might be easier to learn on a glass board, not to say that epoxy is bad, i just bought an Al Merrick 6'4" Tuf-Lite that's epoxy. I don't know, hopefully I helped you out. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll have fun, I would stick to the 8' range for your first board, you'll have more fun and be able to catch waves a little easier. Good Luck! Get it quick, we got swell comin' in Sunday, xxxxx...you could always rent 'em until you find the one you like the best, too.

Thanks. Southpoint is part of the NSP brand. Gonna go for it. Looking forward to the weekend swell. The past few weeks have been lousy on the weekends and cleaning up on Mondays...not good for the working guy.

i hear ya on that, weekends are pretty much the only time I have, especially now that it gets dark so damn early, oh well...take advantage of weekend swells and pray for more of them. Have fun, man. Enjoy that new board!

I've got one of the Southpoint expoxy boards as my first board (bought 2nd hand) and they are fine to learn on and tough. You'll want another board in a year though.
