Want to build a 10ft longboard, what are the capabilities?

Postby surfaMIKE » Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:56 am

Howzit

I would like to build a wooden longboard with dimensions 10'X24"X3.5" with a single fin, and a concave running from nose and fading out a bit towards the tail
Is this wooden tank gonna be noseridable?
Can I hang ten on it?

I have a 7'4"X21.5"X2.5" minimal, but it isnt all that great to even get to the nose, let alone ride the nose (obviously though). Its great for anything! from 1ft up, and I can do some pretty big turns (sorry Im bragging a bit) but I would love to get into proper longboarding and just be different from everyone else, cause I have a 6'2", but it is not all that fun. All my mates are shortboarders, but the jelousy on their faces is very evident when I catch all the perfect waves on my minimal when the surf is small, so Im not bothered about whats "cool", Im a soul surfer...anyway, back to the topic, please may I have your opinions

Yes you can do what you want on a old school 10' woody just keep in mind it won't rip or turn like a mal and for your size I'd say go 10' 5" for even a better float and a way better platform to run around on havin fun.

Yes me too I get shots fired at me from both sides for I'll surf the shorts and logs and my minimal's are still some of my funest they work in all conditions and yes me to have that envy look from a few buds who see me on wave after wave after wave, If they don't wan't to just have fun instead of tryin to be a wanna be pro they would improve all around as well as have fun and it is truth to be known the best surfers in the world are the ones having fun. So yea go for the 10' and like I said just keep in mind that that kind of plank is super stable they just don't turn like a mal or short I allso recomend trying to borrow/rent one and see first,,,, or not cause just having a woody is a cool thing anyways. good luck man and have fun.

thanx hey, I appreciate the help

Ive already shaped the fin, so theres basically no turning back cause Im hooked on building this thing!

Yes I understand that its gonna be a @#$%^& to turn, but then again, pretty much all longboards are like that

I cant borrow/rent/steal a board like that around here, mainly because there are few surfers in my town, and fewer longboarders, and NO wood longboarders, so I'll be the only one with a classic wooden longboard 8) . And the only guy who has a longboard close to that length (hes got a 9'4") wont even let me look at it to let me get an idea of the rocker I have to make!! Hey some weird people in this world....

HA HA ok as long as you realize this is gonna be a true "log" you'll be fine.
and as I said who dosent love the looks of a wood board even if it just hangs in your home!!! try www.greenlightsurfsupply.com they have some log templates and rocker shapes you can download It's a lil hard for me to feed my wood templates into my scaner for ya. Good luck and any more questions just ask.

thank you

Do you think I should glass the board? or just put resin over it? or just varnish it?

If I am glassing it, I wanna use two layers of 6oz on top, and one layer of 6oz on bottom.....geez this board is already putting on weight and its still just a thought!

I want to make it a triple stringer for that classic look, as well as for strength, so would there be a need to glass it? Do you think the glue will be strong enough to hold it together?

Okay....Im scheming I should scrap this solid wooden longboard idea. I went to our wood shop and worked out that it would cost waaaay too much for me to even buy the wood (R2520, which is about $350. but thats alot here in south africa, especially for a dirt poor, cocky, 17yr old idiot). So I have come to the conclusion that I can do everthing I want on my mini mal except for a hang ten and really good nose ride....Oh well, it would just have been a novelty anyway. Thanx for the input though hey
