fall before you get up? doesnt it require to to stand before you fall? o_0
unless you are talking about fallling down the face before you get up...
either way i think its just practice... thre isnt like a predetermined place to put your hands.. but i bring it up to my chest :)

A dozen things could be going wrong and you just do not provide enough information to be able to tell what it might be. One quick tip that I wish I had gotten when I started... Do not try to catch the wave too late. There is a point where it really breaks, if that is where you are paddling into it, you are too late. You need to be pretty much up by that time. If you are not, you will nosedive or just get thrown off.

Look at the pop up vide on youtube, it explains it a little better. Here are some tips

1) When you pop up you place your back foot first, then the front, in a split second but in that order.

2) Also, a begginer problem is that they pop up and place their feet together, facing forward: the back foot is at 90 degreees, the front at around 48, never forward.

3) Hands on the deck, not the rails, a common mistake is to hold the board from the rails when trying to pop up

4) Lastly: stay in the whitewash, about chest high, and do nothing but practice pop-ups until you get them right. A common mistake is to hit the lineup, if you are a begginer the better surfers will get most of the waves and you will only practice on 2 or 3 waves. Do 20 pop-ups in the white wash, do this over and over for a month or two until you pop up regularly, then go try the lineup.

Hope that helps.

here, found the link for you, hope it helps. There is one where the back foot is in back way too early, it's just to emphasize that on a shortboard the back foot goes down preety much while your hands are still on the board.
