Wax - basecoat and topcoat

Postby greypump » Mon Sep 15, 2008 6:17 pm

For the Mrs Palmers brand - is the Mighty Mounds the basecoat and the ultra tacky blue box the topcoat?

What happens if you get them wrong way round?

Well the basecoat is kind of harder and more sticky, the topcoat is softer. So you would probably be losing the wax easier or feel uncomfortable standing or paddling on it. I personally have started using topcoat only as it's softer and I like it more. It's a little less sticky though.

basecoat is a really warm/tropical wax. it usually will say 'basecoat' instead of the water temp on the box/paper. i don't know if mrs palmers has a basecoat formula, i just use sticky bumps' basecoat. put it on like regular wax, then put whatever temp wax you want. for me, being that i'm in a lot of warm/tropical water...or has seemed that way the past few months, it's nice because even if the topcoat starts to rub off, loose traction, there's still that base coat underneath. not as tacky, but it's better than smooth glass

i didnt realise applying wax was a rocket science

i have always just used one type of wax to wax me board. The only time i change me wax type is when the ater temp. changes.

Simple just wax your board until it has the desired amount of grip your after. Just play around with how you wax it, you will find a technique which best suits you.

HA HA funny!! Base coat will be a harder and thinner layer vs topcoat just smear some around and youl see the one that is hard and stays relitivly flat That's your base.

Haha, well if way you apply it feels good to you, then there is no need to even care about all this rocket science, lol.

yeah, i always thought just throw some wax on that bisch. but then i discovered the base coat, and i can't go back. it's just nice to have that extra backup layer down
