How do you angle your take off without going over the falls?

Postby cjtomassi » Wed Sep 10, 2008 11:43 pm

I have been surfing for a couple of months now and my progress has slowed. I can ride striaght down the wave towards the beach but my rides are pretty short. I know that I should be angling my board away from the beach to get a longer ride. Everytime I angle my board I go over the falls and have a bad wipe out. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

yeah its pretty simple, angle it in the direction youre going to go in when youre paddling for the wave, espetually if its a steep wave. as soon as you feel it and stand up, make a sharp turn. it takes a while to get down most of the time, i surfed oaho for 5 years and i still mess it up sometimes. it depends how steep the wave is though. sometimes i wouldnt angle the board while padding because it makes it harder to catch slow breaking waves

look where you want to go, that's the biggest thing. if you're looking down at the board, you're probably gonna go down. when you angle, it's just a little bit, nothing like a 45 degree angle or anything. just slightly. look down the line, put a little bit of extra pressure on the inside rail, and you should be good to go. it takes a little bit of practise to get it down

Looking down the line.

So it sounds like I should paddle just slighty angled (or no angle) and look down the part of the wave I want to ride. I guess the important part is that I look where I want to go. I'll give it a shot this weekend. Thanks guys.

bottom turn man , just turn after you drop in.

sounds like you need to start learning your bottom turn, don't worry about
trying to angle your takeoff yet you need to learn how to turn first and trim down
the line. angle takeoffs are something you can learn later when its necessary to
get into a wave.

Well i agree with what was said above....if it's smaller though and your not able to to a bottom turn it helps to just angle a tiny bit, put some pressure on your inside rail and look down the line where you want to go. If it's bigger just drop in and practice your bottom turn. You might also be going over the falls because your angle the board too much or you are too close or right under the peak. Try to take off on a shoulder, that should help too.

yep catching more wave and doing the bottom turn is much more efficient in the long term. paddling in the angle is only useful in certain situation.

Your first sentence answers your last. You just need time in the water....feel great that you are catching waves and standing....keep that up, and keep you eyes on that beautiful green open face, you will get it. as long as u r persistent.

watch the guys who are getting the waves..watching helps a lot...surfing helps more.

Keep the stoke!!
