Tom Curren ain't a real wave-hog! If you want to surf with the biggest god damn schmuck on the planet, paddle out anywhere Derek Hynd is surfing!!!! If it was possible, he'd probably drop in on himself.

Hossegor 2002 I was paddling out and looked to my right at the surfer doing the same only to notice it was Shane Dorian  . I had a bit of a chat with him and he seemed a really nice guy. I wished him luck in his heat in the ongoing Rip Curl Pro - and he lost  .

Fuerteventura 1990 I bumped into Laird Hamilton (not literally, that would have hurt!) at the ferry port as I was waiting to pick someone up off the boat. I noticed this big dude standing at the bow of the ferry with his shirt off just staring ahead as it approached then I realised it was Laird 8) . He said hello back to me and I think I just kept staring. He must have thought I was quite strange  .

Not nessesarily a massive name, but for all you english surfers my brothers been out the back with Mr.Alan Stokes at Croyde....I was not impressed when he got back and told all, and the reason I didnt go surfing that day was because I had to go into school and give my views on a new planning development....it was a weekend aswel!! Gutted.

I dropped in on Rob Macado or whatever his name is about a year ago when he was visiting Raglan here in New Zealand. My mates dared me to do it.
It was bloody funny (afterwards) and he did get the joke.

well, not been in the water with anyone that I know of but at the British Nationals the guys are always just walking straight past you on their way in and out of the water. Robyn Davies, Sam Lamiroy, Alan Stokes and Jake Boex were the more well known names. Sam and Jake were both at the afterparty too, Sam was on the dancefloor right next to me and Jake was sitting at the table next to us. That's the closest I've got though. Nothing too exciting.

I wsn't actually in the water with him, but about a year ago, I saw Taj Burrow drive past in his car as I was heading down to the beach. I didn't really think much of it then coz he wasn't as famous.

They're all just normal blokes. Treat em like rock stars and they'll act like one as well. We're all surfers in the water. Treat everyone the same.

From what I've seen over at Raglan when encountering guys like Mark Richards (on Holiday) and several other notables over the years the thing they like best is not being treated any differently. Just say gidday & walk away. It's far cooler to not make a fuss.

 Really liking Taj at the min!

Brent: As always, talking a lot of sense! Everyone would love to act cool around a pro, it'd be great to be naturally able to cope with such a once-in-a-lifetime experience with such coolness...but the reality is that most of us would be a tad excited if i actually happened to us...you seem kinda relaxed with the whole meeting-and-greeting pro's thing?!

Not saying I've met or surfed in the presence of any big names however, cause I haven't. I only recognised Rob whatever his name in the water that day because of his silly big hair & skinny little runt body.
The dude can surf however....

Tom curren is probably the most gentlemanly proffesional surfer you will ever meet. I've been lucky enough to surf with all the pro's over the last 20years, mostly in france and spain, and if you think Toms a wave hog, wait til you meet some of the new kids!!

Hes not a pro surfer but I went surfing yesterday (Ala Moana, Hawaii) and I saw an instructor teaching a guy. The instructor said the guy was an Atlanta Falcons linebacker playing in the Pro Bowl (today). I think he was Keith Brooking. The instructor also said he instructed Peyton Manning's wife. My cousin said he saw Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake surfing or trying to surf somewhere on the east side of Oahu.
