Describe your riding stance. Whats your style?

Postby Banks » Tue Aug 26, 2008 11:48 pm

me: loose, slack, fairly mellow.

being quite tall and skinny i dangle all over the place, absorbing any of the unforeseen bumps in the water. ive grown up skateboarding and think that my mellow style was transferred once i took up surfing some time ago.

to me, style in the water is very important, not just technical ability. a perfect example of what riding style i'd like to mirror is that of Rob Machado - natural and effortless.

Whats yours? and what pros are similar to you in terms of stance and style? Lets hear 'em!

it's been so damn long since i've been surfing i can't remember...lol...nah
I like to get into that charging Greg Noll stance and just fly down huge faces...the only thing missing here is the huge faces... I am praying for Hurricanes, please let the rest of them form and come straight for me, Please!

umm, i don't know. i've never seen video or pics of myself surfing. i'm guessing my steez is pretty ugly, but i could care less. i'd like it to just be smooth and subtle, kind of like parko

I call my style "About to fall, can't believe I'm standing up," which is closely related to drunken kung foo style.

Scrabble to my feet, wobble for a few seconds (although the amount of time spent wobbling about on my feet IS improving) then any number of undignified wipeout methods.....

Im gonna go with Gangly.

nothing worse then having a mental picture in your head that you are flying along on a real wave looking like youve been doing it years...only to be shown a camphone pic of you looking like mr tickle on an ironing board in an ankles worth of mush!!!

BUMP....back to earth

HAHAHA philwilson, you crack me up!

You know what the worst thing is? When people get that camera phone photo of them 'surfing' that 3 inch mush looking like a gimp, and use it as their facebook photo.

Mr tickle :D

At first: straight up, all six foot something of me. Terrible, I know. If I make the drop and do not get bumped off, I will usually remember to bend my knees. If only I would before making the drop, I think my success rate would be a lot higher in choppy surf.

Hmmm, funny enough..I may or may not have just been thinking of putting my wobbly pic as my display pic here......yer I'm like a real show off hehee.

On a more serious note, I did actually examine my stance in the morror last night (for lack of waves) and it certainly looks ungainly when i do what i have been doing up to now.

I have noticed quite a lot of longboarders are around my height and they seem to stand far more straight up then me.

i kind of end up hunched.

is it a good thing for longboarders to be less crouched?

conversley, i was told in my sirf lesson to keep a low centre of gravity knees bent etc, however can a 6 foot guy take this too far? cos i think i might be.

would being too crouched from the off make it harder to turn?

any advice on what constitutes a "good" longboard stance?
