Surfing not a sport! WTF!

Postby Dmd*Grl » Sat Aug 23, 2008 6:24 am

So my x bf was texting me saying how he needs to go for a swim at the beach so he can get into top shape for football, and i said surfing is my sport. Then he said its not a real sport... no wonder he's my x. damn i hate people who think that way. CAuse I know for a fact that a football player (or any other sports player) will stand no chance against a little 7 foot wave out there. :x

For me its a passtime, not a sport.

Sport sugests competition and governing rules etc, which does encompas surfing competativly but not as a passtime

I think the reason people have this misconception is because surfing has a pretty small community. Surfing when it began was not even about competition, it was a ritual for polynesians

what you want to do is drag him out on a board next time it gets big enough to be slightly tricky to get out. then get him to tell you its not a sport.

does anyone else get people telling them that they could paddle out on a big day easily?

few mates... myself included go through a cocky phase when they start nailing their take offs.. suddenly they think they can take on laird....

accompanied a friend out a few weeks ago on an overhead day with fairly steep waves... just started coming together for him he and wasn't in the least worried... couple of nose dives and a slap of his board later we were back in the real world again.

as for your ex - huge difference between water fitness and running fitness... been running fit before and then looked like i was drowning after a few lengths of a pool, and more recently vice versa.
if you can't get your ex onto a surfboard get him to hold his breath under water while you punch him in the face fo 30seconds and see if he's out of breath at the end of it lol

yeah it used to get to me too..."youve been surfing a few weekends a year and you're not standing up and doing a few tricks?!?!?"

reflect on it a bit and realise they dont get to experience "the joy of surfing"

my boyfriend doesnt think its a 'sport' either, personally i dont care. I still enjoy it. If you feel the need to show him know that its not a sport/not that difficult etc invite him out for a surf sessions and give him your thinest, shortest shortboard you have and see how he gets on  (of course in safe conditions blah blah blah)

yeah, i agree with that. the way i surf, it's not so much a sport, it's more that that. in a competition, then yes, a sport. it's like, someone running 5k every day, it's not quite a sport, more of an activity (surfing's more than that for me though), but you turn that 5k into a race, then you have a sport. jebus, they call poker a 'sport'

HA HA HA LOL shizz ya kiddin me I'm in great shape gym built,ex military, very active guy and did play football no comparing surfing to that!!! Any fool that thinks they are more than the power of the ocean should put down the pipe and get a reality check. It point blank kicks my azz and for how much I eat shizz am supprised myself I don't wash up on the shore like kelp,,, but anyways why are you even talkin to yer ex they are called EX for a reason. as for a sport well.... Yes!!!! It's a sport and one that generates some $$$$$ too just dosen't get the coverage quite the same as oh say,,,,, football. But lest I remind anybdy, I don't ever remember things like sharks, box jellys, coral reefs, drowning, gettin slashed by some fins, etc, etc etc on the football field. Don't get me wrong football is hard on the body to but to compare surfing to football is the same as comparing bandaid cuts to brain surgery. For me I'll take surfing any day over football.

I know a lot of meatheads that spend all their time in the gym and never actually DO anything with their fitness. They're stronger than me and more cut and yet... their ass would drown if they paddled out with me in head high waves. I tell them so. They don't care for this.
