Salt Indigestion?

Postby phillwilson » Tue Aug 05, 2008 11:56 am

Hi all,

just musing on a reoccurring problem and wondered if anyone had anything to add.

If I have been out surfing for a longer sesh and its been a day of the usual thrills and spills , I tend to find I have drank several ponds worth of sea water by the end of the day.

when I get home I find myself with quite uncomfortable acidy soreness between my chest and throat (is this heartburn? not sure)

anyway just wondering if others get this and what they do about it.

The salt water usually gives me the burns on the other end of the line. As far as I can tell, it's all a part of getting better. (i.e. learning not to drink as much sea water.) But, hey, 3 days of sunburn, ass-blast, and a few cuts or bruises are worth the thrill of the ride. At least that's how I see it. :D

yea i get the burn sometimes and I have the urge to like spit the mucus out. I don't know how other people handles this. even though i don't swallow any, but the sea water must come inside through my nose.

I hate it when I swallow sea water, I dry heave.

Drink a lot of water and you should be ok.

never noticed a problem...only the occasional funny look when a giant nasal drain of salty goodness pours out on the floor of the liquor store as I was bending down to get a drink.

:D Yeah I don't get that. Happens to me too. Why wait 2 hours to come out? It happens at the worst times.

I did a little google research and came up with the following gem!

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... =surf+nose

Also, some other people seem to think- maybe it goes in your sinuses? And then comes out later... I dunno..

You're pretty drunk aren't you?

I have never had the water spew, dunno why. Water is getting jammed in my ears more easily now though, and I think I have grommets growing in my ears....

Aww bless... I love drunk people on the internet. It's something that doesn't happen often enough!

And as for the ear thing- have you tried wearing ear plugs? I wore some when it was colder to stop from getting earache, and they worked. You can get them really cheap from sports shops etc.

Oh man if you guys saw half the crap that floats around in our (So Cal) water, I think the salt content would be the least of your worries.

I'm constantly spitting water back out. (Not gnarly green loogies - just water.)

from malibu south thru oc is mostly filth. north la and ventura have their filth but are a bit better.

phillwilson have you surfed the tropics??? seems to have higher salt in the hot water....burns my eyes more than home....wonder if you are having this problem worse there? This would confirm your salt theory, and a good reason to take a trip.

I used to get really bad salt indigestion when me and an certain person went surfing together – went by myself the other day (first time in a decade :P on a carbon fiber board I built  , single sheet wrap with a reinforced stringer  ) and was absolutely fine !
Never happened before either :?: !

After surfing in Cayton Bay & South Bay (Scarborough), I went to North Bay, just up the road. To my surprise, it's barely salty at all, even though.. hey.. it's the same bit of sea!

Have any Scarborough surfers know a reason for this? The only thing I can think of is either current, or maybe a freshwater source nearby?
