Hey here is the video of my mates and me from last year boarding. I'm the one called "Shearo" wearing a black jacket (most of the time) and green helmet, I'm also the only one whose not an Antipodean!

Enjoy!

Today's snow report

Mt Hutt is CLOSED. 45cm of snow has fallen overnight and it is still snowing hard!!! Unfortunately strong winds are severely affecting visibility and have put our road clearing efforts on hold. The snow and winds should ease this afternoon and we will work to clear the road and get our crews up to prepare the mountain for full operations tomorrow

Without exception, vehicles should NOT attempt to access the ski area today. The avalanche hazard is extreme and significant drifts will remain uncleared until much later today.

And I've got the day off work tomorrow 8)

Pics to follow.

Bugger

You're going to miss the wife getting shoved down the towers on a pow day - always good value when she gets to the bottom and loses the plot on me 8)

Way too cold for surfing at the moment, but we've had another storm that's put about a metre of new snow down on the local mountains

Mt Hutt has a magically growing snowdrift. The camera that takes these pics is on the roof of the first floor of their base buiding - so about 5 metres high...

Nothing last night...

And this morning....

We're having the best season ever. So many epic powder days and already about 6 times more base than we had for the whole of last season.

Saturday should be amazing once all the roads get cleared and the mountains are opened up.

I use one pair year around, has vents, I love them. Start checking steepandcheap.com as well as whiskeymilitia.com as they have great deals. Hard and soft goods they've got it all.

And for everyone in NZ.........I'm sooo jealous it's hard for me not to hate you all.

Have fun out there!

I've just got back from Porters. Managed to get down Big Mama before it got closed due to avalanche risk.

It was sick. Probably the best single powder run I've had (I think - said that a few times lately 8) )

Deep and untracked and steep.

Loving my new Arbor Abacus, crap on the groomers, but goes so well in the deep stuff, just powers through turns and never stops hanging in there.

those sites are great. do you need the vents often? im moving soon and im trying not to spend money i dont need to. also, what do you mean by hard and sorf? the outer layer? whats the difference, is soft more comfy but less durable?

Hard is like a rain coat, soft is like the outerskin of neoprene almost. Sorta. This is really hard to describe to someone who's never had to buy a jacket, haha. Soft generally stretches more, feels more comfortable, and is more breathable. However hard is going to be more waterproof (for less cost) and windproof. Durability can be debated because you can hang a hardshell on something and it might tear, while soft is more like a fabric. Soft is more expensive and to get the same amount of waterproof and windproofness in a 50 dollar pair of hardshell pants you probably have to pay 400. So go with hard for the pants for now. I picked up a nice pair of Sessions pants for I think maybe 40 dollars from one of those sites. When it starts getting cold out west they will start putting more stuff up.

You can get text message alerts and stuff for those sites if you are looking for a specific item and it will text your phone when it comes up. I use my vents a lot, but we also have a kinda non-traditional ski experience. It can be pretty warm while skiing. But you're doing a lot of work so you get hot. The key to staying warm is staying dry. If you start sweating, you're dead. So having the vents is a good option so you can open them up to cool down.

Hang11, got any pics??????

I only use my vents in spring conditions. Those days where the sky is blue and the sun keeps beating down. The days you all end up with severe goggle mark sunburn trauma. I wouldn't say they're essential, more a comfort thing.
Waterproofness is more important, but even that can go wrong. My mate and I were going up a chair lift in the alps in a blizzard which was quite damp and he got a pool of water forming in his groin, he didn't notice till it soaked through his sipper into his thermals and pants. Those were about £250 trousers!

Most important is style! If you're gonna be on your arse all day you want to look cool doing it. See all that crap about being at one with nature and about how no one should judge how you look? Leave that at the beach, you're on the mountains now and when did you last see a badly dressed person up there!!

I read in the paper at the weekend that the South Island has had the most snow in the mountains for over 100 years.

We're having something of an epic season 8)

Its an Anti Kea device, otherwise you find them sat on your back pecking your helmet as you drop down the mountain.
