well, reverse discrimination is a problem in hawaii. in a lot of spots, polynesian locals will not "share" their surf spot if you are a foreigner. so much for aloha spirit, right?

Go to Maui! Much better for a honeymoon and way better for surfing...

Oh, and listen to Raekwon...he knows what he's talkin about....on the big island they are very anti-american, keep your gaurd up, that's all...don't go droppin' in on the locals or they might dropkick you in the head. Just a little friendly advice.....Go to Maui!

Nah, no disrespect that's awesome...you'll love Hawaii! And I do need to correct myself when i said "anti-american" (that was just ridiculously stupid on my part), I was simply informing you so you can stay alert, and trust me if you have a chance island hop over to Maui while your there, i think the plane ride costs about a hundred and some change, you will not reret it and there are the sweetest surf spots on that island...unbelievable places. I surfed this spot on Maui for almost a week and i can send you a link to a video that was shot there...I got shacked in a 7 foot tube, beautiful crystal clear water, 80 degree air/water.....damn, sorry...I'm ramblin'...I love Hawaii...got to move my ass to Maui. Good Day!

wow you will not make it home with that kind of attitude. ive lived in hawaii my whole life and jist about a month ago some big guy was taking his stress out on my because i just barely got in his way on a wave he was on, said sorry like 10 times despite his rude, racist remarks, and he kept calling me out, so i called him an a55hole and continued on my way. next thing i know i have a longboard in my face, blood streaming out my eyeball, and the asshole still wont go away. this all happend at a spot ive been frequenting for 5 years, and have never seen him at before. if i were at a break i didnt know, i would have just left.

last year a 22y/o tourist was killed by some guy at a beach park, exploring on the wrong side of the island.

also, hawaii isnt florida. look up 96817 on zip codes online. thats where i live, and its about 85% asian or pacific islander. no i dont live in china town, thats pretty typical for hawaii. and asians are not a problem, since most of them chose to come here or their relatives did, ive never had problems from them. all my friends/girls ive dated are asian.

for whities like you and me, its the islanders. some have deep resent for the white man and his culture, and especially tourists like you. and to be honest, even i resent tourists in a way.

my best advice to you is if they do not seem to be liking your presence, then leave. dont think you deserve their respect at their break just because you yeilded to them. dont forget that in their eyes you stole their land and raped their culture, now you are surfing at their break.even if youre not actiong like a kook, they are probably more experienced than you anyway.

Yes there probably more experienced than me, seeing how I have been surfing a very short time, as for white like you and me I am 85% or so indian not very white at all!! As for what happened to you, I feel for you its was probably one of those things wrong place at wrong time. As to the yeilding part I dont yeild to no man, woman yes after all it takes a small man to step up to a woman! Respect on the other hand I will give untill it is not deserved! But like i said i am a beginner to intermidiate surfer going on my honey moon I will be just looking for a spot with 3-5ft rolling wave intead of the 2-6ft choppy messy stuff here in the panhandle! After all I will be on my hooneymoon and if i had it my way I wouldnt want to leave the hotel if you know what i mean!!!!lol But anywho i get were your comeing from but I dont beleive I will have any problems.

And please dont take me for one of these oneabe bad a55es , I just stand up when i need to stand up, and laydown and let it blow over like the wind when I need to! Agression doesnt solve problems!

I guess I just proved myself wrong again by just going ahead and assuming you were white(need to work on that whole thinking b4 typing thing)...if I can tell you one thing about Hawaii, show respect for the land, the people and def the ocean and it wil be all good...Have Fun! and congrats on gettin' hitched!

hilo

Postby ijahmon » Sun Aug 31, 2008 10:30 pm

the surf on the big i's not so good, and you'll have to face some reef rash potentially if you head south of hilo. actually lava, but it cuts the same. stay away from any pounding beachbreak and don't go in the warm pools b/c you'll get a staph infection. i know where you'll prob'ly end up surfing down by the red road, and since you're brown, you'll probly be ok. the info that was given to you was good and people took the time to write how it is, but i think you didn't really show much gratitude. brown or not, take attitude to hawaii and people will react in a very harsh way. it's not outside of the norm to be jumped by a group down there, so you better be as tough as you make yourself out to sound(pretty worthless on the internet imo) if you think you can deal w/ violence down there. the hui is like the group of an area, just call it locals and you're an outsider. when they start talking pidgeon you might not know what the they're saying; it's a different language than english and it's not tagalog.
it's more like the 3rd world down there than most people would ever imagine, so take note others of you who read this.
going to a better spot, dropping in, and going straight is considered a waste of a wave down there, so go to the right spot if you're a beginner - there's nothing wrong w/ learning, contrary to what people may say. i've lived there and this is what's up imo. don't ask if you don't wanna know. there're some really good people down there and a lot of real dicks. watch out for theft too! peace

Are you saying if you look kinda brownish/darkish most people won't bother you surfing in Hawaii as long as you respect?

There aren't really any beginner spots on the Big Island. The island of Hawaii is a relatively young island that doesn't have really developed reefs that are good for surf. Many spots are difficult to get to with sharp lava rock and are extremely treacherous. There is a surf spot called Honoli'i right outside of Hilo but it's very crowded when there's waves and the water can be muddy and murky from run-off as it rains frequently in Hilo.

As for localism, yes there is some of that here but it shouldn't be an issue as long as you stay away from surf spots that are too advanced for your surfing ability. There is the potential for jerks to be in any lineup ANYWHERE that there is surf and not just in Hawaii.

It doesn't matter what your ethnic background is. If you don't show respect to the locals in any area, whether it be in Hawaii, Costa Rica, or even California, you're asking for trouble.

BTW, the hotels in Hilo aren't very nice in terms of a honeymoon destination. The hotels in Waikoloa are much nicer. I think Maui was an excellent suggestion for a honeymoon. Perhaps you and your wife can do a little island hopping. I can recommend nice hotels and places to go while you're here. I used to live in Hilo (I live on Oahu now) and I've visited Maui, Kauai, and Molokai. Aloha, Cat
