UK folk and sharks

Postby greg@hoodatsurfco » Sat Jul 19, 2008 3:19 am

Do you guys have sharks there? I mean there are sharks every where you go but specifically where you guys surf are there known predatory sharks?

I surf in Northern California and think about sharks when I am out of the water and see pictures but for some reason never when I am surfing, perhaps it is because I am in the zone when I am out there. We have a pretty dense population of Great Whites but they attack so seldom its not even worth caring about.

The UK has some sharks, but not of the man-eating variety.

Every summer there's a 'Great White Seen In Cornwall!' scare story in the newspapers, and Im sure its bound to happen one day, but so far they've all been mistakes, hoaxes or at worst unconfirmed.

No need to worry about sharks in the UK waters.

Basking sharks, porbeagles, and lemon sharks mainly. Lots of seals and kooks. Fleshing cold water, shite surf most of the time. Weaver fish, jelly's, and lots of sewage. Great place to surf bud, pop down :D

haha, that answers my questions.

I guess you can't have good surf and no predators? we get some brilliant surf out here but we also get a lot of sharks, jellyfish, seals etc etc.

And I guess hawaii is known for surf (so i heard ;)) and they get wonderful tiger sharks..

<--- would much rather surf above a great white than a tiger shark or bull shark

Saw my first Basking shark last year @ Porthcurno, still an impressive sight, saw a pod? of dolphins at Sennen Cove and over 40 seals whilst in the water over the summer of 05 ! (six weeks not one day :D ) There is a lot of cool wildlife to see but you quite often get some tooll who will scare them off (for example a small private boat scared of the dolphins trying to get a closer look!)

Hey k mac! nice to hear from you! Im over with the real sharks now - still havent seen one, much to my disappointment.

Yeah, that 'Shark' story was a great one - video evidence and everything, and a whole new question for the newbies to ask: "Are you scared of the Cornwall great White?" :bang:

A couple of years ago, whilst surfing in St Ives Bay, I saw 'something' huge breach about 200 yards from me.

It rolled as it came out and I wasn't sure what it was - apart from 'big and black'.

The next morning I saw all over the papers and in the local news that it was supposedly a Mako.

No idea, but personally I think the tailfin was parallel, rather than vertical, but then again, I'm no expert and the guy in the fishing boat (which I'd also seen when I saw 'the shark') on the news seemed quite convinced..........

I didn't do any more solo dawnies for the next couple of days......... :)
