Anyone ever see a guy enter a surfing competition...

.....with a retro-fish board (dual fin, wide body, deep fishtail)? Not talking about the pro-circuit here, but what about a local competition or something. Just wondering if any has seen someone enter with a fish and compete well with shortboarders.

I dont think he does comps as such but Donavon Frankenreiter surfs a twiny fish in the drive through dvds and does a pretty good job of keeping up with the shortboarders (theres a great section at jbay when hes on a twin fin and killing it).

But other than him i dont really know anyone that would enter a serious comp on one.

I think they are great boards to surf

go for it ... absolute rippers aside i'd say from my very limited experience that the guys i've seen on fishes are a bit more stylish than your "average" shortboarder...
might do better than you think.... be sure and post how you got on!!!

best of luck dude!!!

No, but...I do know a guy who entered a short board comp on a boogie board...the kicker is he rides it standing up....the judges were not impressed.

That is awesome!!! If the surf-snob judges didn't give the sponge-surfer any kudos, did the spectators and fellow surfers apprieciate what that guy pulled off or did he get ridiculed as well? Personally, that guy should become a local legend at least.

He is a local legend, he surfs County line in LA. We call him angry Bob. He is a nice guy but his anger comes from nobody relating to his thing. The surfers mostly shun him and the boogers don't get what he is up to.

I like him and have had many a nice sesh with the Bob man.

At the Huntington contest, Bob paid his entry fee, checked in, and surfed his only heat. They did not consider standing a trick(since it was a surfing contest) so his waves were in the 1 to 3 point score range, even with his 360's and cut backs, the judges were not impressed. He did not advance, and suffice to say has not entered another contest.

Bob is just ahead of his time, and it makes him angry.
If you are wondering, I think Bob weighs 140lbs or less. Like I could stand on a booger if my life depended on it...240lbs here.

should have given him points for originality or something... not really up on how comps are scored... not a whole lot of interest in them, although i do like watching good surfers...
find it really hard to pick between two good surfers... unless its really obvious that one's having a bad day...
got to be the same for judges... must sometimes come down to personal preference or in some cases bias...
