My delimma

Alrighty so here's the deal.

When I was in San Diego last week, I bought a board because I was fed up with the rental places. I decided I could either ship it back home (to the east coast) or sell it before I left. Well. I decided since I got the board cheaper than I would have gotten it here (probably 300, 350 here, got it there for 175) that I should ship it, thinking it wouldn't exceed 100 bucks.

Well I was wrong. First off UPS wouldn't take it in their store, it was too big. Then I got lucky and got someone that has a business with UPS Freight pickup to ship it to me, but it's gonna be up to 200 bucks.

I would consider selling it, but then the people who have it would have to worry about people coming to look at it, etc

The board has a nose ding, and one on a rail, nothing serious. It has however been broken in half before, but it was a pro repair and I couldn't tell when I was riding it. It was a fun board to ride, it's an 8'6" which to me seems a bit like an in between size, but it was still fun.

So. I can either--

1. Get UPS to do it, up to 200 bucks, for a cardboard box and shipping

2. Sell it to someone there, but I burden the people who have it

3. Buy a bag, ship it to their house, and get them to put it in there with bubble wrap and ship it (100 bucks for bag, then 50-75 for shipping, but I get to keep the bag)

4. Give it to some stoked kid


Other options I'm open to.

Many shops take boards and will sell them for you...check out a few, they will charge 10-15%....they can send you a check.....then buy a new stick at home

ya southcoast do that so you dont have to burden your friends just get them to drop it off. Or get them to take it to the local pawn shop in OB doubt you will get much doing that. If however you really dug the board then shipping it with the bag sounds like the best option

- despite living on the south coast of england with its lacklusture waves I have thought about buying/obtaining dinged up boards for the kids at my youth club to work on and surf, i reckon it will be a great project but havent got round to it yet - doing bikes at the mo. spread the love of surfing and I am sure that karma will reward you!

When I bought a board in Maui, they shipped it back home for me once I was done with my trip. Try going back to where you bought it and ask if they could ship it for you - of course you pay for shipping.

In any event, consider it a lesson learned to check shipping options before doing such a thing.

good on you for making the San Diego surfing safari. There are some good ideas from some fellow surfers here. Have it brought to a shop and take whatever they will give, even if it is consignment. Or, have the friends bring it to pawn shop in Ocean Beach. Take whatever they give and give your friend 20% for his trouble. Sounds like you are already out of CA, therefore, opportunity for giving the board to a kid at the beach may have passed.

'nother idea: think you'll come back? Then have friends hold board for next time.

Still 'nother idea: if you want to store board in San Diego area, send me a Private message. One of my co-workers lives in Escandido, just north of San Diego. He is an adult with a large house. He'd store it for you if I ask him to. I go down there once in awhile for work from my home in NorCAL and could check on board or bring here to ship to you.

You may have more options than you realize.

Thanks for the offer billie. I would love to come back, but right now it's not in plans. Still something worth considering.

The thing about putting it in a shop is that it just kills me knowing I'll be trying to sell a board with a ding in it. I could so easily fix it, but didn't have the tools out there. But maybe I'll call one of them and see what's up.

Another idea that went through my head is I thought it would be cool for there to be like a huge community of boards to borrow in cool surfing places. Like in each place you went there would be like a collection of boards you could borrow from, so people could put their old dingers in there, or boards they don't use, or something. I just think nobody would donate and people would abuse it, if ya'll can think of any way to make it work I'm all ears. It would be sweet to keep it all karma-run, but maybe people could buy into it, like 20 bucks or something, and then with the funds we could buy new boards to beef up the quiver.

Well if your friend is willing to bring it to me in PB I would be willing to fix the dings in it for you as I already have a patch kit and will be doing some work on my boards pretty soon anyway. I could either ship it to you and have you reimburse me, give it away for you, sell it for you, or hold onto it for a little while for you. Your call, but either way I am willing to repair the dings for you whatever you decide.

I also like this idea of having some "community boards" for those of us that do a lot of traveling. especially since I will be going to England this September, as I really really hate rental boards with a passion.
Maybe we should start a thread revolving around this idea and see what kind of response we get back.

Tomcat, yes..I don't think people would donate and it would definitely be abused (i.e people would just steal them). Only way would be if there is a tight-knit group at a local break, where 1 person lives very nearby and people within the "clique/group" can go a borrow from the "free for all/donated" quiver that is found at a particular individuals house. I'm sure this is done already, but that is the only way I see it working (to prevent theft and any bad-blood between friends). As long as you are aware that the donated board is now no longer your baby/possession and it is highly likely that someone else is going to ding it up and/or break it there should be no issues.
