Going to Oahu June 5-19

Postby scsurf » Tue Jun 03, 2008 5:31 am

I'm going to stay in Waikiki a couple of weeks, in june. Hope to surf a couple of days on my stay.
I ride a short board and would like to avoid crowds (who wouldn't).
Any advice on where to go and to what avoid and other tips that may help keep me out of trouble?

stay out of bars and clubs

do not buy pot, meth, or any other illegal drugs while there

do not wander around after dark if you are drunk

leave auto or truck doors unlocked when parked at most parks and beaches

visit Pearl Harbor and take the little boat ride to the memorial on the water

spend an afternoon visiting Kilauea Volcano National Park and stay until dark to see the lava glow - in fact, bring a box lunch so you can much and watch

drive all roads around the perimeter of the island

don't eat any mainland-style fast food - there is simply too much good local food

make friends with hawaiiSUCKSexcept for surf

go to China town one night for dinner and order stuff you have never had before

if you are Caucasian, be prepared for a little reverse discrimination (it's OK, everybody should know what it is like to be treated unfairly)

in parks and along hedge rows, look for mongeese - they were brought to HI to control rat & mice (problem is mongeese are diuranl and rats & mice are diurnal so they never meet + the mongeese it all the bird eggs)

go to the Hawaiian king's palace and pay to take one of the tours, it's right in Honolulu

enjoy the water, many fine beaches

Thanks you guys, I had a blast. I didn't know the area but straight out from my condo, is Three's good enough for me warm, blue and nice but have to time it for the less crowded times.

Yes I am Caucasian but I assure you I had no choice.

hawaiiSUCKSexceptsurf were you at Ala Moana yesterday?

Going home tonight sorry couldn't check computer till now

so you caught some of those big waves 2 weeks ago then yeah? no, i dont go to alamoana unless i can go in the morning or something, its too crowded. i really should though since its closer to my house. sometimes i surf and kewalos though which is the last break before the boat canal towards town (opposite of waikiki) or kaisers (dame thing, only toward waikiki) otherwise i surf cliffs or mansions at DH

where else did you surf? and, DID YOU CATCH THAT SWELL? i miss it.

There was some swell the whole time I was there.
It wasn't real big the times I went out, fun size Head high +&-.
I only surfed 3s, it was a family vacation so I just got out when I could.

It can be hard to get waves when those stand up paddlers are in the line up. Are they at your spots? If it gets to popular it can be a real problem.
