Scarborough advice

Postby crispo » Wed Jun 25, 2008 5:35 pm

I've been to Cayton Bay twice and found it quite difficult as the waves seemed very steep and I was struggling to make the drop. Both days were onshore wind days which obviously didnt help. Im quite new but found it a lot harder than when I surfed in France or Devon. Is North Bay not quite so harsh or did I catch it on harsh days??

Cayton does tend to be fairly steep on good swells. your best bet for easy mellow waves is south bay. north bay is a little mellower than cayton but not all that much. good wave when its on though. south bay does take a little more swell to get going because it has to wrap round the headland. there are peaks of varying size at south bay as well making it perfect for begginners. hope this helps.

^^What he said^^^

Filey is also a decent option when a big swell is runnning for a smaller cleaner wave in on shores for the NE facing breaks

Echo that...

I was there at South Bay last weekend and I really enjoyed how ridable the waves were, comparative to Cayton the longer periods between waves left me much more time to work on position on the board and slow paddling to get moving. I seemed to actually pick up every wave i went for rather then Cayton which is either awsome or frustrating depending on the individual wave.

i'm new to surfing, only been to cayton twice. first day was spot on, although it was my first surf i was able to catch waves and to my amazment stay on my feet :o . Second time i went the tide was right in, the waves alot bigger and i got totally battered! only thing that made me feel abit better was i wasnt the only one getting owned by these waves. the place was pretty busy and in the 2 hours i spent there i think i seen about 3 people manage to get to their feet. maybe i caught it on a bad day?

anyone surfed saltburn? its closer to where i live so going to try it.

I was only going off local advice plus this from secret spot website

Tues 1st July!!
Swell Direction: SE - Size: 1-2ft - Wave Quality: Flat in the morning but could well pick up late aft/eve to 1-2ft but dependant on wind strength and direction throughout the day, cross onshore winds dropping towards evening...better than nothing!!
Wind: 18 mph - Direction: SE - High Tides: 02:42 4.9 / 15:07 5.1

Im still early days with my sirfing so eveb little waves will do something for me.

hope for something good tho.
