HELP! Swell of the summer and my rash is GAAHAhahaaaaNONONO

Postby LOLRuss » Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:52 pm

After a long lull, the waves finally came. I was out for 6 hours yesterday in two sessions. My board has a VERY thick wax coat on it. I got a pretty good rash going on my knees/thighs/belly in the morning. It got a lot worse in the evening. It kept me up last night even.

I went out this morning, the waves are really good shoulder high and glassy, and it was excruciating. To the point that I had to come in after one wave. Just moving from sitting to paddling had me gritting my teeth and growling. It really, really hurt. Stung like hell until I got home and washed the salt water off, screaming, in the shower.

Help. I need to surf. If not today, at least tomorrow. Best options? Liquid Bandaid? Vaseline? Duct tape? I'll do anything.

Rash vest would help the top of me, but thats not what really hurts. What REALLY hurts are my knees and thighs. Like very, very much.

I don't think they make speedos in my size anywhere near here, or tights. That might work for my legs?

No, not this time of year. Not since February have I needed a wetsuit.

Ok, lycra sounds like a good idea logn term. For today/tomorrow, someone told me to liquid bandaid, vaseline, and then buy some pantyhose and put them on. That should help?

Thats a good idea, but... honestly there isn't a large market for board shorts in my size. I had to order them from Hawaii. I've only found one place that makes them.

You could try an organic wax. Might not help the problems now, but might help avoid it in future.

Get a thin (2mm or less) shortie wetsuit. They're pretty comfy in warm water.

You can wear the pantyhose when you get home

The water is 80F, and I have blubber. I get hot as it is when I paddle hard :)

But, my wife has some under armor tights that seem to be the same material as my quicksilver rash guard. So, I am going to use that.

Also, I have some liquid bandage and... oh my god it hurts. It hurts worse than alcohol. I did my knees and screamed like a woman for 5 minutes while glopping it on. I'm gonna do my thighs, and then coat that in vaseline in the morning. Then don the tights.

Then, if I'm feeling modest, the board shorts :D

And I'm gonna look for some Lycra cycling shorts. I think that is the best solution.

perhaps antihistamines (sp) to reduce the rash for the time being if its a reaction rather than simply sore skin?

Was it going off down in Flagler? It was only thigh high up here in Jax. I might go tomorrow afternoon after work, first surf in 3 weeks.

Sets were shoulder high, and very nice. But my scabs hurt so bad, I couldn't stay out. I would recommend coming down, but go south of the pier a ways. The crowd there is full of dickheads.

Its good at about 9th street. Its good 14-16, and its good up by 23rd.

A & D ointment will heal the rash. I usually get it on my knees/inner thighs and ribs. A little A & D and it's all better in the morning (usually).

Please please please don't wear pantyhose. I don't know about what your supposed to get as far as waves but it is looking pretty good till the end of next week for us. Yep I too have had those scabs in the same places when going from a wetsuit to boardshorts and yes it is painful. It usually takes a day or two to heal then your fine and it wont happen till next year. I think you have 2 choices.........1) take 2 days off or 2) Nut it up and bleed and then heal up after the swell goes away. All the ointments in the world are not going to help once your in your condition it is just time. Oh I dread this....I have not been in, in a long time and I know I am going to be in the same condition come Sunday night. But it is sooooo worth it. 8)
