San Diego Surfers

Postby tomcat360 » Fri Jun 13, 2008 9:48 pm

I'm flying out of this hell hole to go to San Diego on Tuesday!

Not taking a board with me due to ridiculous costs but planning on renting/bumming one while I'm out there.

How the waves been recently? Any spots ya'll suggest to go/avoid, etc?

I stick to the small stuff, but my friend who loves to rip it up (and who's been pretty picky since returning from his NZ trip) has been getting some good sessions in at Scripps Pier in the evenings (after 5:30).

Hopefully some of the SD regulars give you better tips, but just thought I'd put in my two cents =) Hope your vacation is fun! If you like indie rock, let me know and I'll give you the scoop on the good venus, bars, and any good shows next week to make up for my lack of surf spot tips =)

hope you ahve a blast mate. Ya theres a bit of south west at the moment so Imperial Beach (thats the most southern part) should be pretty good. As should the local hot spots scrips, blacks, swamis etc. Its nothing huge though but at least its been really clean. Had my best session in ages on thursday in clean 2-3ft surf unfortunatly i somehow popped/strained a muscle and i doubt i will be surfing any time soon :(

Im not much of a forcaster so take whatever i say with a pinch of salt. But deffo check out the local hotspots and also check out sunset cliffs down my kneck of the woods great place to wander about even if its flat.

Yes, rent or buy. You can find many used boards at all kinds of prices on Craigs list dot com. Look up San Diego and type in Surfboards. You can also go to many different surf shops and rental shops and buy a board. Of course, you can rent, too, but the rental selections might not offer a board you'd like to have. If you buy, you can sell to shop when done. You won't fair very well, but you'll get something for it. Another option is to simply give the board to some kid at the beach before you leave.

You will be fine for waves if you seek beaches in southern California with a southerly aspect. The classis example is Trestles which is the stretch of coast immediately north of San Onofre. The south swell season is from June to October. In San Diego, the south swell spots are Coronado, Windansea and Blacks. Working north, the usual suspects are Swamis, Oceanside, Trestles, the Wedge in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Malibu. Santa Barbara has Rincon, El Capitan and Hollister Ranch. You may especially want to go to Swamis one day because it is an unusual place. The best thing about your trip is there are something like 110 surf spots in San Diego area.

I have been surfing at Diamond St. in north Pacific Beach and yesterday is was a lot of fun. If you are going to be in that area let me know and we can paddle out. I'm sure I could dig a board out for you to borrow, or else you might be able to rent one from the shop just south of diamond st off of mission blvd., can't remember the name of the shop.

Yeah man I'd be interested in paddling out, I am yet to find a board. We got in late Tuesday. The two girls I'm with have some huge shopping excursion planned so I'm lookin for a way out.

However, I gotta warn you, I'll probably get rocked. Unless it's tiny little logging waves, then I'll feel at home

Don't waste your vacation shopping with girls!

If you want some little, fun stuff (average has been knee high with some chest high and plus sets), go to La Jolla Shores. It's great because if that's too small for you (or you get warmed up real quick and want to progress), 100 meters north is Scripps Pier which is bigger. It looked pretty nice last night at 7pm (and less crowded by then). Or do the dawn patrol around 6am which is when I'm going tomorrow. Tourmaline in Pacific Beach is smaller and fun too. Lots of long boarders on that one.

deffo recomend tourmaline great spot for longboarders. Slower wave and usually not as big. Its actually been really fun waves lately roughtly 2-4ft with an occationally bigger set. Been foggy as hell though

There is currently a bit of south in this current swell but come monday there looks like a bit of north with a bit more size entering into the mix which should make for some interesting conditions.

Where you staying?

As ambolina said check out La Jolla Shores, there's plenty of shopping there, or they could drop you off and head up to La Jolla Cove, there's even more shopping there, used to stay at La Jolla Cove for one week every year when I was in college, definately a place to shop.

Yeah I completely missed your post CHarvey

I went ahead and bought a board. I surfed yesterday morning at OB, then Imperial Beach just for the hell of it, then surfed Tourmaline last night. Surfed OB again this morning. Those damn girls wanna tan and shop again, so I plan on ditching them and taking the car. Anybody wanna surf?

Perhaps even a little surfing-waves session?
