Whew! It's hot in California this weekend. My entire family (me, wife, and big black dog) all went to Bolinas in Marin County for surfing and to beat the heat. We left later home than we should have and drove long county roads below the speed limit to get there. Everyone was happy, including the dog. We looked at some things along the way and tried a few different roads. Once there, walked the beach a little and tied the dog in the shade. Then we paddled out. I caught 5 or 6 waves in succession and had rides ranging from poor to pretty good. The waves quit in our area, but seemed to be going well at the Duxbury reef. Instead of getting into that, we paddled way out across the smooth sea simply for the exercise and to enjoy the water. Paddled in eventually with big winds. Got the dog, went to a cafe, and ate BBQ oysters and salt cured anchovies at a sidewalk table. Took a little walk with the dog after that. Drove a different route home that included redwood trees; still no hurry. The entire afternoon and evening was simply pleasant. It was doubly pleasant to share the casual cafe meal with my wife. Oh, and there was home made black berry pie for dessert!
The guy that took me surfing for my very first time told me previously that, as a teenage, half of the fun was simply driving to the beach with his buddies. Well, I agree that a big part of the fun can be the adventure associated with the journey, as well as, whatever else finds its way into the mix.
