diving at the channel islands some years back. we were 50 feet down and there were a lot of sea lions. one in particular was brushing my tank and doing swim by in a playful manner. i kept touching it's side as it would bump me. one time it went a bit further out as it was reloading for another swipe. it turned and started toward my head. no question on a new course directly at my face. about 5 feet from my face it opened its mouth, showing me all its many sharp looking teeth. i was staring at the pink tongue and teeth, frozen, shitting my suit. at the very last second it veered up, solidly brushing my mask with its chin and neck. i sucked that tank empty with my panicked breathing. it left me alone, but i figure it had to show me not to muck with it.
years later a pup sea lion put his head on mt surfboard, i wanted to pet it, it was so cute, then i remembered the pink tongue and pointy teeth. i chose not to pet it.
another time me and a buddy got chased out of the line up by a pair of sea lions. we think they were mating. they were bumping us and barking at us. i was quick to bail.
i don't like em much.
