never back down... and never engage. sounds like a contradiction but i've found a subtle balance that took a lot of beatings to get right (luckily they all happened when i was young enough that none of them were serious)...

if someone's really getting aggressive hands up in front of you palms out (this is a physical barrier which will stop any real impact if they do kick off). then calmly and rationally talk them down. never act submissive as this can be just the sign some of these people are looking for. most people who like to get aggressive are unsure of themselves and submitting may only serve to give them confidence.
