beer brewings..

Postby greg@hoodatsurfco » Sun May 18, 2008 8:53 pm

Went to Sacramento (california's capital city) and made some beer with some buddies at a place that allows you to make beer using their gear and brew master's to help you.

We made it twice as hoppy as their double IPA so we expect good bitterness and flavor from it.

We used (for those of you who know hops) cascade hops, columbus hops, Chinook hops for the bittering, fuggles hops, and some others.

It was the best smell ever when you'd lift the lid and watch all the malts in the bags cooking in the hot water.. smelled like a fresh brewery. mmm

cannot wait to bottle it in 5 weeks, and take it home!

@PapaW
I am building my own brewing setup here without a kit.
Gonna try to be a badass and go about it myself with online instructions.

We only did it at that place because my ladies cousin who works there got us 40% off so it ended up being cheaper with all the hops we used to go that route.. it cost us $180 USD, and if it was us buying the hops and malt ourselves it would have cost closer to $300 USD... we used over a 1000grams of hops :):):)

4 cases of 24 US 22oz bottles I believe. Those are 50% bigger than our pints.

If you tried lager already you'd might as well try an ale. Lagers are typically a bit more difficult to perfect due to the temperature requirements.

We brew beer out of our house too and we just finished a Mexian Lager that is a bit darker than a corona or something like that and it actually came out really good.. they are in a perfect mix of flavor and lightness for the hot summer here.

Went to a wedding this weekend, medievil themed and everyone had to go in fancy dress. They brewed up some mead for people to have on arrival at the reception - evil stuff. A couple of them and you were well away.
40kgs honey, yeast & a bit of salt I think it was.

I never made anything that didn't make me sick just by smell. You should distill too. Start up a moonshinin' business.

move to NZ and build a still from a disused swimming pool ladder. It's heaps quicker than waiting for beer to "condition" in the bottles! :lol:
