I started on a 5'7" Morning Star, single fin about 20 years ago!
Ive ridden a Mal once in my life.

my first board was a 6'6'',.. learned the basics 2 weeks on a (7'6'' I think) minimal (surfcamp). I knew all about shapes and beginner board stuff but surfing, for me, is shortboarding, so I got one.

so if youre fit and ready for a challenge, why should you try a longer board? No question that the whole buoyancy thingy helps beginners to get the basics,... thats the way for average people. I'm physically above average (not conceited, I do some serious sport :wink:

) and why not choosing the hard way if you dare?

should get a board that got good byouancy and easy to paddle, fish would be a good start, not semi fish though

I am currently learning on a 6.6 Isle. Its harder than a longboard but I am still enjoying myself. Dunno guess its if your willing to suck longer. lol I don't mind putting in my dues. GL!

my first board was a 6'6" nsp and i had no majour problems BUT i had been hireing 8" foamys for about a year before that
