Short board for big older guy

Postby slowburn » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:37 am

Hey everyone, looking for some advice on a new board. I just started surfing this year and have gone about 40 - 50 times and have gotten to the point where I can read the surf fairly well and can comfortably drop in on up to 7 foot waves. I am riding a fun board which I find kind of slow and I am contemplating getting something faster and more maneuverable. I'm 215 lbs 20 of which I've gained this year and although I'm 40 in a few months I can still get around pretty good. Is there a shortboard out there for someone my size, thx in advance.

there are big boy shortboards but are aimed at good surfers. you might be able to surf it, try renting one from a shop and see how you get on before buying one.

thx for the reply, I'll have to check out the rental shop here and see if they carry them. I wouldnt consider myself a good surfer yet, next year maybe, but I'll give it a try all the same, Im guessing its around 7 feet? I also heard that a fish is a pretty fast board, is this an option for me?

yea, well its not all down to the length, thick and wide is best, look some up on google and you'll see what you're looking for. fish boards are supposed to be hard to surf and loose although i don't know anything about them really, most people would go against it.

Your best bet is checking out a Fatboy Flyer. They're made for heavy bastards like us :)

I'm into weight training so needed to find a board to suit my weight (i'm 6'1, and was about 200lbs at the time); and a 7'8 fatboy worked a treat for me to start with!

I'd call Chris Prophet at Shacked Surfboards to discuss this with him. He is a tremendous board sharper, has a bunch of boards in his line, and his boards are very attractive. He listens well and shares his knowledge freely. He can be found in Concord, CA, near San Francisco, or in Santa Cruz, CA, at his manufacturing facility.

I was about 230 when I started surfing again. Was very happy with an epoxy afterburner for a while there.
Good allrounder, nice and fat, fast, loose.
