yea,um it should be like a foot taller than you for additional flaot and paddle power.keep in mind that a board that looks slick may not be the best board to learn on.many begginers are tricked into buying boards that are meant for an acomplished surfer.and thus have great difficulty learning.get a rite board and you will learn in no time.

i just bought my own first board about 3-4 weeks ago, and i know exactly how u feel; so many boards 2 choose from, which 1 would be best 4 me? well i bought a 9ft longbobard Liquid Shredder, and it makes surfing so easy. I managed 2 stand up on the first wave i caught and it's just like standing on a moving footpath. My dad and i wanted a board that we both could use so that's y we had 2 get a 9ft 1, but even i can use it. I'm not familiar with imperial units but i'm 1m 58cm tall and weigh about 39kg in the metric system. So mainly go 4 a longboard; they're the best 2 start with, and if u can get a Liquid Shredder coz they're cheaper than most boards and made out of a special material (i'm not quite sure what material) for beginners so that it's kind of soft. it's like a cross between fibreglass and foam, sort of like a slightly spongy fibreglass. I'm sure it'll b really useful. Hope i helped!
