Indeed :D I'm crashing at Chris De Burgh's (big nose) on Monday night, it'll be something of a whirlwind visit, but a visit nonetheless!

Either way you must have gained 'something' from it. Experience is experience in whatever it may be :)

I have gained a feeling that I am not good enough for the National Oceanography Centre  Nah seriously, they were very, very tough. Basically they seemed to want you to be an expert in every single project you expressed an interest in, which clearly isn't possible unless (like some of the applicants) you happen to be an undergrad doing your dissertation on EXACTLY what the PhD was on. The only people who came out of the interviews and said 'yeh that was ok' were Southampton undergrads.

At least one girl actually came out in tears. It was that tough.

Ho hum, i'll do a masters and go back next year ready to bust their balls. It was good experience as i know what to expect for next time i suppose. But im very glad i'm home!!

Libby, you may be surprised. I hire scientifice and engineering personnel and have worked in academia and industry. Whenever I'm hiring, I have this grand wish list of all the skills and talent I want. Of course, almost no one can possibly possess all of this. This leaves me with assessling those that have most of what I'm looking for and determining whether they'll fit in with the rest of the group. My fingers are crossed for good luck for you. You never know in these things. Sometimes the first choice hire candidate rejects the offer or takes another offer. Then I have to look at the number two candidate. No offense, but this could happen. Another apparently strange thing that happens is that while recruiting, an employer will find someone interesting that isn't quite right for the job at hand. But, they'd be great at something else that may not be advertised or even formatlize. Low and behold, the candidate is offered a different opportunity than what they interviewed for. When it happens, you know it is because someone spotted talent in you. I wish you the very best of luck. Although it was a very long time ago for me, I was in your shoes once. With some tenacity, you will do more than fine. After all, you have stoke!

Cheers billie, the NOC actually recruits around 35-50 PhD students a year about 20 -25 of which are EU/ international students, the rest are UK. But I dont think i have quite enough experience to get in this year. Thanks for the post though and i'll bare it mind for next time :)

In the mean time i'm probs going to do a MRes in molecular and cellular marine biology at Plymouth, possibly even starting this year :D
