Best spot in Maldives for beginner

I'm planning a trip to the Maldives in May 2008 and wanted to know the best island for a beginner.

I started surfing a long time ago, but have been living inland for a few years and now only get out surfing on trips (so I'm pretty rusty).

I've heard that "Piddlies" (also called "Ninja's") on Kanifinolhu is a mellow wave. Anybody ever surf it, or hear anything about it? Any other islands for a fat old man?

Hi there,

I went to the Maldives for my honeymoon last July. We went to Dohnveli Island. Was a nice place, not much to do though. The surfing point on the Island was 'Pasta Point' and it was good (looking anyway). There was a company there who, some how had the rights to the waves!!! They charged $75/day to walk into the sea with a surfboard. I refused to pay for it, but after speaking to a couple of guys from Oz they said its the best $75 they've ever spent. I'm a bit more than a beginer and there were a few days that would have been awesome for me, then there would have been a few days I would have died! Its surfing over reefs, which I've done here in the UK but getting in was quite nasty as the shore break was battering some guys as they went in. Def not a place to learn IMO.

If your a bit skint to jump on a boat surf trip. You could hop on the shopping boats that head to Male and surf Male. I got it head high a few years back. Gin clear water not very heavy. Although very shallow on inside. Very Manageable. Check the break is still there tho because I think I heard that land reclamation or a wall or something was planning on being a built which might get rid of the break. There are plenty of waves in North and South Atolls to suit all sorts contact tropic surf or Atoll adventures they might be able to help.
