Sitting on your board

i cant sit on my board for crap.. is there a technique to it? its a struggle to balance and im just wobbling and jerking around in the water.. its really quite sad... the only kind of balance i can get is when i press one of my leg into my fins.. but it doesnt work that well anyways..

dont force it, just find the centre point and bobs your uncle

i still fall over regularly, a good trick is when you fall off check your fins-looks like you actually meant it

It's a matter of find the point of equilibrium, and not being so tense. It's like riding a bike with no hands, or being on a horse. When you find it, you'll know you're in the right place and it will be natural.

It's the funniest thing watching someone all over the place trying to sit on their board, especially when it seems so easy now.
We all had to start somewhere and you'll soon get the hang of it. Don't be tempted to not bother - practice every minute you are in the lineup.

Also, kind of crouch down - dont sit bolt upright as you'll just topple over. After a while, it'll be second nature, and then you can sit bolt upright to spot that incoming set

i actually find it easier to sit with my back straight plus my back aches if i hunch over for too long

I used to be like you... You just have to keep practicing and get used to the balance. You have to experiment different spot to memorize that "sweet spot".

like many others above have said, just keep practicing and one day it'll click. I also still randomly fall off, but when i started surfing i'd say after a few weeks i got the hang of sitting balanced on the board. Like so many things practice makes perfect.

does anyone find that if you go out surfing for a good few hours that you feel your suit slightly rubbing on the back of your knees where they make contact wiv your board whilst sitting on it? (i always find this)

you should start off sitting at direct center of the board and move back bit by bit til you get the balance, the lumpyness of the surf will also change the position of the board you sit on.

Whenever someone wants me to take them out to learn how to surf, the first thing I tell them is that it takes a while just to learn to sit on a board. They laugh but then I laugh harder when they waddle out and try to actually sit.

It takes a while. But once you get it, it becomes absolutely second nature. I find it a little more comfortable to recline a bit and let the tail pop out from behind me rather than the hunched over, nose out of the water style.

you should just be still and relaxed while doing this it is super easy when you get it. i like to play around on my board in between sets to leard new little ways to move on my board

well... i never really realized the importance of sitting because i always went alone.. so after i went once and tried to sit and fell off... i just decided that i would just lie down but then after i made this post i just tried it the next time i got out... although i fell off a couple of times i soon got the hang of it ... i can sit on it fine now.. as you can see on
