I wish Hawaii had a surf forum or that more Hawaiian surfers were members of this forum. It would be great to network with other surfers on Oahu. I'm kind of envious of the tight knit surf community you guys have over there in the UK. Anyway, just thinking out loud, so to speak...and 'jacking this thread. Aloha!

check out this forum http://surfermag.com/community/ i see a lot of people from HI there a lot of the stuff is not surf related, but is funny, the forum with the most people i've seen so far...

as for size.... i don't go in when it's bigger than 12 feet, i feel like you're actually running away for your life so the wave won't break on you, it's better to surfing comfortably a nice wave, i like it over head high.

I've only surfed about 15 times so I'm really only comfortable in 3-4ft surf. Even 4footers give me some fear if they barrell over on top of me during the paddle out. The 4th or 5th time I went out I tried 7-8ft surf. I was very scared and didn't enjoy that day much at all. Too many missed waves and getting caught inside = exhausted. Plus where I surf its very hollow with lots of closeouts, that doesn't help either. I'll stick to 5 ft and under for quite a while.

^ Beleave me, if it is 8ft and hollow, I will paddle out FAR around the waves, and a place with alot of close outs, you won't find me there unless it is like 4 foot and sloppy.

have done over head height and hollow a couple of times and had a laugh... even got to my feet a couple of times. the rest of the time that i didn't get clobbered i just got that oh so famaliar slapping of the nose of my board on the water as i tried to haul myself up to no avail.
3 to 4 foot is ideal for me.. hollow or not.

It also depends on the break..Ive been in some breaks where it been bigger than other places but no where near as heavy, if that makes sence.

^ Yea, If I had to choose I would rather paddle out in Jaws 40ft than teahupoo 10ft. (but I preferably I wouldn't paddle out in either)

Honestly, big for me would be 3-4 ft. 2-3 ft would be ideal

Big enough to rip the board off the leash when I dive under it. Grrrrr...

over 4 is too big for me.
